I'm looking to understand where this sudden interest in producing this kind of alternate personality fantasy based farn art origitnated from. What's the drive behind it? Can someone shed some light for me? I mean, they're great Youtube personalities for who they are, but this is something else to me.

I think the dark side of markiplier originated from him doing creepy videos ( I do t mean him playing clhorror games but he would sometimes act creepy ) and then it just sprouted into fan theories and eventually mark turning there character of darkiplier into an actual canon character
As for anti septic eye, I honestly couldn't tell you for sure but my best guess is that septic eye created him first

People like creepy stuff, people like mark and sean, people be creative and create stupid theories out of nothing.
Then... the artists join.
Then it becomes great and people are happy, especially since sean and mark has done videos containing "anti" and "darky" it keeps getting more theories and it gets a wiki,
now it's getting popular and gets new ideas and more artists, animators, theorists, and fans who create more content for people to enjoy.
Now it's become a full circle and it will continue like this until it ends abruptly.

actually, most of the fanart stemsΒ from mark and jack'sΒ canon dark sides. They are two youtubersΒ called Jacksepticeye and Markiplier which are gaming channels. They have a couple of videos in which their sort of dark personalities appear (antisepticeye and darkiplier) and people have gone off from that to create their own stories from these characters

This is from the jacksepticeye wiki and tells that Anti was created by the fans, not by Sean directly but the idea of Anti probably began with some creepy thumbnail Sean had on a video or two near halloween.
For your knowledge, they "show" Anti and Darki in videos to appeal to the people in the fanbase that like the fan-characters, if people stopped caring about their presumed "dark sides" they wouldn't be present probably at all in their viedos, only reason they'd be there would be for Sean and Mark's own amusement.

It would make sense that Anti could do that but looking at the sketches for Anti's past, he looks like Jack still. A really interesting concept though. Wish we knew more!!
