Description Falastur
yunqëa aran Ondonórëo
ar tárirya

Tarannon was son of king Siriondil. He was the twelfth king of Gondor and he first of the Ship-kings of Gondor, who extended the realm far along the shores west and south of the Ethir Anduin. Commemorating his victories, Tarannon assumed the name "Falastur" when he took the crown.

Tarannon was also famous for his Queen, the "nefarious, solitary, and loveless" Berúthiel of Black Númenórean origin. She had ten cats, nine black and one white. Berúthiel set the black cats to spy on the Men of Gondor and the white cat to spy on the black ones. Eventually Tarannon placed her upon a boat cast adrift at sea. He was then the first king to die without an heir, and was succeeded by his nephew, the second of the Ship-kings, Eärnil I.

So back to the kings of Gondor. As we are coming to the period of the mighty Ship-kings I chose more complex decoration. Dominant colour is of course blue, representing the sea. The sea is also in the background, together with a port showing Falastur's ship-building efforts. And of course there is the infamous queen Berúthiel with all of her cats.

I love the very Byzantine look you've given Tarannon and Beruthiel; in my opinion this is the most regal version of her I've seen.

I feel that your figures are a little stiff, but in a way it reminds me of playing cards, showing royalty, and it is a formal portrait it seems, so it does not merit very much emotional expression.

I really enjoy the detailed, beautifully colored border the most. I also love the Elfish font, that feels so right, and your architectural details and background is so nicely done. I am crap at backgrounds myself, so I really admire your handiwork here. Also the stonework really looks like stone, and I feel the proportions of your building are good.

yay for Tolkien fanart!

Thanks a lot for your comment!
I am more a landscape artist, but I try to practice figure drawing and I intentionally chose this series of formal portraits which is not intended to express much emotions. I'm glad you like the border and background!

Queen Berúthiel was a crazy cat lady, uh? XD

A question: what is your source for all these distant kings of the old dinasties of Gondor? So far, I haven't found a book of JRR Tolkien or these encicplopedias about the Middle Earth that are around with this kind of information, and I would love to read them if I found them. :3

The basic genealogical information about the kings is in the Appendix A to LotR. Other fact are found in various places, but a good source on the internet is the Tolkien Gateway [link] or the Encyclopedia of Arda [link]
