Description Atanatar I
quainëa aran Ondonórëo
ar tárirya

Atanatar I was son of Turambar, the great conqueror who expanded the territory of Gondor to the eastern lands of Rhûn. Because of his father's victory over the Easterlings, Atanatar's reign was peaceful and uneventful.

We do not know virtually anything about Atanatar I, so the only inspiration for the picture was his name. Atanatar relates to the Atanatári of the First Age. Therefore I used combination of the emblems on the Three Houses of the Edain as a base for the decoration and colouring (look here ). Adding the queen here has no special reason, just after two warrior-kings I found it nice to draw another royal couple.

I really like the Byzantine dress and hints of the style as well. It's nice to see a little bit of not well known garb of history make its way into fantasy settings. Good job!

I like Byzantine art, it has been a great inspiration for me. And i like to think of Gondor as a kind of byzantine-like culture (for example in some of my pictures you can see that inspiration in architecture ).

You're definitely right. I noticed that when I read the book. I got a Byzantine vibe from Gondor, itself being a remnant of a great empire of old and a center of civilization in an otherwise wild land. Not to mention, if the map of Middle Earth is layed over a map of Europe, guess where Gondor would be?

Yes.. In fact, unlike the previous pictures in the series, here I wasn't sure how to colour it, so finally I decided to do it just this colourful.

Perfect, as usual! I love the colors and texture details!
Not to mention Gondor. I love Gondor period. And, you know, all of Tolkien's books...
But really. This is amazing. I wish I could draw people-- backgrounds-- EVERYTHING-- half as well as you can
