This is a portrait of the angel Islington from the fantastic novel “Neverwhere” by Neil Gaiman. He is my most favorite angel of all time. XD

I've never once heard or read of a female angel except in popular fiction.

Well, Gaiman did describe "his" face as "perfectly androgynous." I think he uses the pronoun "it" to refer to Islington, too.

Yep, that was my understanding as well that pretty much all angels are male. I can accept that they are fluid in gender, if they wish to be, but to my knowledge only male angels were portrayed in the past and spoken of in the Bible. But again, I am not religious at all, so I might be mistaken. I just like the angels as a 'fantasy race', and man do I love them! XDD

Lol. I don't know about you, but I'd never call Archangel Michael, or Raphael "female", but maybe my understanding of this is limited, since I am not religious at all (quite the contrary; I hate religion). XD The little I know though, about the bible, the Nephilim (half-angel half-human children) were made by a human and angel sleeping with each other.... so the angel needed to have a gender to be able to have children.... and also, if I remember correctly from my hellish days in Sunday school, those angels were all male angels that slept with female humans.
Islington is more 'male'. Androgynous, but definitely on the male side of androgynous. So yes, in fiction (but also in religion) angels have genders. Somehow this part of the bible (the only part I actually liked reading) is always overlooked these days, don't know why. Male angels are fun!
