History: Unlike his herd mates, Matthew does not have a dark past or a traumatizing life event to remember. He was born and raised in the Olde herd. His parents were strong believers of the Great Compromiser, and probably still are to this day. He was brought up practicing that belief and did not refuse doing so, however he was and still is overall indifferent to it; he does not believe nor disbelieve it. As a colt, he was taught to be very proper and polite, even to those he despised. He was disciplined if he ever spoke out of turn or did something inappropriate. He was not rebellious, but he liked to test the boundaries with his parents, and to his dismay they never wavered in their punishments. During his younger colt days, he spent much time with friends. However, he very soon realized that his family was normal; no horrid deaths, no terrible exiled relatives, no dark past. And for some reason, this made him envious of his friends, for they had things they did not wish to speak about. When he spoke with them about it, they all told him he was lucky and said it was a good thing that he had no red in his history. Even so, he was still envious. As he aged and matured into a young stallion he began wondering if a normal horse like him would ever measure up to anything other than being just a regular citizen. He felt out of place in the Olde. Everyone around him had seemed to find their purpose in the herd, while Matthew wandered about in obliviousness. He became very closed off and quiet. He hardly spoke, only really engaging people when spoken directly to, but still remaining polite and proper. He thought of himself as normal, ordinary, nothing special, and with those thoughts brought blandness into his life. Everything he did was boring and the only time he ever found joy was listening to the Vanner stallions, Trion and his father, tell story after story of adventures. He was soon nicknamed the “Eeyore of Olde,” although no one ever called him that to his face. He knew about it, but instead of getting angry, he just accepted it.
A few years passed, and Matthew had just turned 19. He knew about the solstice crossing and the equinox pass, and that horses could cross these when the tides receded. But it didn’t cross his mind until one day. He stood at the very edge of the Olde’s territory, staring out at the vast ocean, alone like he usually was. Something clicked in his brain, and as the tide gave way to the paths, he turned to look at his home. And suddenly, without even a goodbye, he crossed the ocean. He traveled across the East Island, and then across the Equinox Pass, settling on the Southern Isle. The whole time he traveled, his mind seemed to be numb. But when he finally stumbled upon the exiled herd, he became anxious and terrified. What had he just done? He left his home without a moment’s notice and trespassed into another herd’s territory. Luckily for him, the herd figured out he was no threat, having not ever been trained in fighting. And somehow, he seemed to just blend in. No one asked about his past, no one expected much of him, and they didn’t call him Eeyore. He slowly began to grow more confidence in himself, however it was still hard for him to find joy in the things he accomplished or did. Old habits die hard.
To this day, if asked about it, he still doesn’t know why he did it. He doesn’t regret leaving the Olde, even though he does miss his parents sometimes and even after the horrid and devastating fire that engulfed his new home. He found that, after the fire, he had a talent for consoling and helping others in their sadness. Because of his parent’s teachings, his compassion was strong and he felt compelled to befriend those who suffered the worst from it. Although not all of them wished it, he became a sort of grief counselor for the herd. He tried his best to mend the sadness with love and kindness. He continues these acts today, even for minor issues that others overlook.
As he's made friends inside the Exile herd, he's beginning to grow more confident. While he's still very compassionate and soft-spoken, he's figuring out that he has more strength than he thought he did. With the threat of starvation in his herd, he's taken up the responsibility and ventured to the Bachelor Herd with a few others in hopes to gain their trust and live on their island while the Southern Isle regrows.
Strengths/Weaknesses/Other:
-He tends to wander, and sometimes get's himself into trouble or finds himself in dangerous situations.
-He's a lover not a fighter, but he won't ever run away from confrontation, and he'll fight if he has to.
-He'll go through anything to get some clovers.
-He does his best to get to know everyone, but sometimes he's very shy.
-He has an unusually large amount of strength, but is just beginning to realize it.
-When it comes to romance and love, he's very awkward, shy, and he stutters a lot. You know he likes you if he hangs around you a lot, even if the two of you aren't talking.
-He won't retaliate when he's being picked on. Instead, he agrees and laughs with the bullies.
-He doesn't speak much generally, but if you strike up a conversation, he is very intelligent and is good at keeping conversations lively.
