RANDOM EVENT
Upon stepping through some tall brush, Jasper finds himself almost constantly getting tangled in the undergrowth and vines. But with his next step, a giant sunflower pops out through the bushes! It appears that there are more, and they've all been unable to emerge thanks to the annoying brush. They seem like they'd be useful, though.
A) Pick the sunflowers
B) Leave them be
C) Free them before you go
As the days passed, Blair had slowly taken Lillian’s words to heart. Even though she loathed the thought of learning anything about the big red brute Lillian so acutely fawned over, she had to admit the idea was pretty good. The closer she got to him, the easier it would be for her to see his flaws. If she pried enough, maybe she could find out what his real intentions were. It still didn’t make sense to Blair that he would just let her hang around if he thought she might leave. He had made no attempts to force her to stay; in fact, he hardly got close to her. She couldn’t recall Jasper ever touching her at all, actually. It was so different from the way other stallions were with her, she was suspicious of how courteous he was being. But whatever the case may be, Blair was going to find out exactly what Jasper was hiding. She just had to play nice- well, as nice as she could manage.
About a week after the mare’s conversation, Blair finally decided to initiate some form of communication with Jasper. The whole time she’d actually been trying to think of a way to start talking to him without seeming suspicious. She didn’t want him to know she was trying to figure him out. She wanted to keep him in the dark.
Jasper was leading them through a denser part of the forest, hoping to keep warm. The days had grown colder as fall grew upon them, and he wanted to make sure they were in a safe spot in case the baby came- though both Lillian and Blair both assured him she wasn’t that far along yet. Once again, Jasper’s behavior struck Blair as odd. Instead of staying where they had been, somewhere open and comfortable for such a big horse such as himself, he was pushing through claustrophobic paths just so he could make sure that Lillian was okay.
So far, the conversation amongst the little group had been rather short and simple. They were walking single file; Jasper first with Amaziyah on his back, Lillian in the middle, and then Blair pulling up the rear. When he came to a rather difficult path to get through, Jasper would hold branches or bushes aside and let the mares through first. Blair had been putting it off every time she passed him, but as she caught Lillian’s eye, she knew it was time to make her move.
It’s now or never. Blair thought to herself. As Jasper let the mares through a tougher spot in the vegetation, Lillian swapped her place in line with Blair. She smiled at her, knowing what was about to come, with smug satisfaction on her face. Blair merely glared and turned her attention to the big red butt in her face. She sighed. This would’ve been better if they could’ve been face to face- but she couldn’t put it off anymore. Not with the thoughts nagging in her brain and Lillian eyeing her all the time.
”Er, Jasper..” She started, rather awkwardly.
”Hm?” The red stallion lifted his head to look over his shoulder, a vine he had been untangling hung from his mouth. His brows were raised in surprise. Blair didn’t usually start conversations with him, so he thought something might be wrong. ”Effryfing okay?” He said through the vine. Jasper’s eyes flickered to Lillian briefly, only now noticing their shift in position.
”Yeah, everything’s fine. I was just...wondering something.” Blair wasn’t doing very well at this. She flipped an ear back, hearing Lillian’s tiny snicker behind her. If she wasn’t pregnant. Blair would’ve kicked her right in the mouth just then. Jasper blinked.
”What?” He asked plainly. Well there it was. Blair pursed her lips. Here we go.
”I know how you and Lillian met. But, what did you do before you found her?” She finally said. It came out a little more forceful than she meant it to, so she tried to soften a little. ”I mean, er, what was your life like before then?” She glanced away. Hiding her true intentions was harder than she thought.
Jasper paused for a second. Blair was asking him a personal question? He couldn’t help but smile a little. Perhaps time together has helped her begin to open up some. Lillian did say she would try and help with that; maybe all those talks they were having was proving effective.
”Oh,” He chuckled and turned back to his work of detangling vines. ”Well, before Lillian and I found each other, I was by myself.” He couldn’t see it, but Blair’s eyebrows raised. She hadn’t expected that. She thought he would’ve been a part of a bachelor herd, and she voiced as much.
”You weren’t with other bachelor stallions at all?” She asked.
”Nope.” Jasper answered. He broke a few branches in order to move forward, and continued on their journey. ”I mean, there was one other bachelor I met before I found Lillian, but he didn’t want to form a bachelor herd, so we just went our own ways.”
”Did you want to start a bachelor herd?” Blair was on a roll. Now that he was playing along, it was easier to doll out the questions. He seemed to be rather oblivious as to why she was questioning him; it was all turning out to her advantage.
”Well, at that point, I would’ve taken any company to be honest.” Jasper admitted sheepishly. ”After Alistair- that was the lead of my birth herd -kicked me out, I had a pretty rough time by myself. Dogs, cougars, bucks...it felt like everything was out to get me.” A frown traced Jasper’s lips. It had been quite a while since he thought about when he first started his journey. ”It was so lonely.” He said quietly. Blair eyed him; she couldn’t see any deceit on his features and he sounded sincere in his reminiscing. In fact, she found it oddly strange how much she related to that statement. Living in Eleazar's woods all by herself, constantly keeping away from both the angry bear and possessive stallions was a never ending task. She might not feel at home with this herd yet, but she understood what he meant- being alone is terrible.
”So when I found Lillian, it was a miracle for me. She was a miracle for me.” Jasper continued, the smile returning to his face as he glanced over his shoulder at Blair. She didn’t know what to say at that point, and so another silence passed between them. She figured Jasper would ask about her past, but instead he let the conversation end and went back to silently clearing the way for them. At least she had something to think about now.
The day went on as they continued, the sun slowly rising until it was high above them, rays of sunlight peeking through the leaves and the branches. Jasper was untangling another rough patch when he jumped suddenly. Blair and Lillian tilted their heads to see what was going on.
”Did we hit a dead end?” Lillian asked.
”No. Come look at this.” Jasper said to them. He made some room for the mares in the thicket. As they approached, they soon found out what the hold up was about. A patch of young sunflowers, caught in the vines. They were trying desperately to reach the sunlight shining down, but the vines were weighing on their stems.
”What are they?” Amaziyah asked, hanging from Jasper’s neck and mane to get a look at them.
”They’re sunflowers.” The red stallion answered. ”They grow best in sunlight- and I think they also kind of look like little suns.” He added with a grin. Amaziyah ooooo’ed.
”What are they doing growing in the middle of the forest here? It’s a strange place for them.” Lillian wondered.
”It’s only a little patch, so maybe someone dropped some seeds or the wind blew some this way.” Blair piped up finally. ”They’ll never survive in this dense of a forest.” Jasper frowned at her words.
”Well, they survived this long. Maybe they just need a little help.” He countered. Blair raised an eyebrow at him. She was about to ask what he meant when he stepped forward and began to detangle the vines and dead branches from the sunflowers. He was careful not to bite the delicate stems or the growing leaves. Amaziyah slid off of his back and proceeded to help in the endeavor as well, raking up fresh dirt to give the soil around the flowers new life.
”Oh! A worm!” Amaziyah exclaimed, holding up the wriggling pink creature between his front paws. Lillian and Blair both grimaced but Jasper merely laughed.
”Yeah, that’s good. That means the ground is healthy.” He said.
”Oooh. So I shouldn’t eat it then?” Amaziyah looked only a little disappointed at the realization.
”No, you should put it back so it can keep the ground healthy.” Jasper said. Amaziyah nodded and placed the worm back where he found it. They watched it wiggle around until it found a soft spot to dig back into the earth. Although she thought it was disgusting, Lillian couldn’t help but smile at the two of them. She imagined a foal in Amaziyah’s place and her smile only widened.
”How do you know so much about flora?” Blair asked, genuinely curious. Jasper glanced up, pushing the last of the debris from the sunflowers.
”My mom used to know a lot about it and sometimes she’d tell me things. Not a lot of it is very useful- like knowing what a sunflower is -but sometimes it comes in handy I guess.” He answered. Lillian nudged the roan mare, a smug grin on her face. Blair pinned her ears back and rolled her eyes.
”Well, are you done being a gardener then?” Blair said with a sigh. Jasper raised his head and took a few steps back, almost bumping into Blair, causing her to jig out of his way. He was so focused on the flowers he hadn’t noticed how close she’d gotten. What a dense idiot. Lillian came up behind him and they all observed the boys’ handywork.
”There. Now they have room to grow.” Jasper smiled to himself, his eyes trailing up to the break in the trees where the sunlight was shining from. Blair let her eyes drift to the mahogany stallion. Something about the way he said it made her think he wasn’t only talking about the flowers.
