Description

You ever notice that sometimes your drawings are all facing to the left/right? I try to vary up the poses, but in the end I realize most of them are basically 3/4 views aimed towards the side. You start to realize that there’s only so many ways you can draw something before you feel that you’ve drawn them “facing that way” already.

Even if you drew really dynamic angles, you’d probably get critical of yourself and think, “Guh, I’ve already drawn them from behind at a low-angle…”

This is part of the reason why I haven't uploaded any of my Meowstic doodles yet. They're all staring off to the right.

I know EXACTLY what you're saying. I have folders of abandoned sketches that are all from the same 2 or 3 angles. XD

yep! There was once a time I had deliberately banned myself from drawing faces facing the right side to improve on drawing faces facing the left side. Once that period was over, I realised I could no longer draw the preceding, so the faces facing the right side, that is. Now I kind of lost my way around both. T^T

I take note of which direction I've had characters facing in recent drawings and try to mix it up but it still happens from time to time.

I think if the pose fits the purpose of the drawing or painting it shouldn't be that much of a problem. ^^

I noticed I do it too and I figured it's because I'm right handed it's easier for me to draw the pose facing left because I can see more of the drawing this way... I think.

JollyJack mentioned this lately as well. Logically, there are only so many poses that can be drawn, so if you make enough art, you're going to eventually use the same pose several times.

trueeee. most of us are right-handed so we just do that unintentionally. but i think maybe left-handed people are drawing characters facing the OTHER direction..

CappuccinoSquid [2013-11-07 03:16:51 +0000 UTC]

I know these feelings.  If I remember correctly, the first is often done deliberately in comics and manga to follow the flow of action from panel to panel, typically stage right for western, stage left for eastern.  I think the latter feeling could stem from thinking of your entire gallery as one body of work, and that like the individual works that make up said body of work you don't want it to feel boring, repetitive, or unbalanced.  Just a theory, though.

yes, i notice, but its all i can draw.
angles are hard as hell when you don't know what your doing in general
so it's easiest to do it facing front or side and even then its tough.

digitalspiritx [2013-11-07 02:42:37 +0000 UTC]

I think a big part of it has to do with which hand you are drawing with. In the case of right-handed people, they tend to draw to the left as the work surface is visually unobstructed; and vice versa for left-handed people.
