good god man they are STUNNING!
And here I always thought that the duke and oliver were the same class.......only to find out this is not so.
does the 8P have a class name? Is she a late BR standard class like the Britannia? (she sure looks it!)

Yes and no.
It was a one off experimental loco, which if sucessful and if steam was longer lived there would have been more built.
However the design was flawed and the loco proved to be hopelessly unreliable and a bad steamer (something which the volunteers have spent a long time sorting)
Some people do call it the B.R. Standard 8, but as there was only one built, and much of it wasn't standard with the other standards, I don't like this.
It is more comonlly known as "the duke"

Superb night shot and what a chance to see two B.R.Standard Icons side by side. Last time I saw a Brit and the Duke side by side was when being pulled by 70032 Tennyson on a Hollyhead - Birmingham and 71000 Duke of Gloucester ran beside our train with the Mid Day Scot for ten miles between Crewe and Norton Bridge in 1962.

Wow, ever wonderful to see the good old days still living. I live no more then 5 miles from the trackbed of the old exe-valley line that ran from Exeter to Barnstaple. I live in Butterleigh not far from the main station at Cadleigh(Bickleigh) and even closer to Burn Halt.

Once again, very steam-a-licious and I do notice the similarities between Oliver and Duke.
