Description This is a Zebra animal buddy I drew, inspired by the Donkey Kong Country games. Looks similar in style to Ellie the elephant.

Cute little fella.

I know this is sort of a year old, but going into the topic of Animal Buddies in a DK Game, I actually sketched out an idea of one not too long ago. I haven't posted it yet but I'll consider making a full version.

I called it "Homer Horsefly", and 2 ideas come to mind in how it works.

1 - Homer Horsefly would be a plethora of itself (kinda like Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy in Pokemon), and they'd be encased inside little ammo-like glass containers to be loaded up into a mini-catapult like gun to shoot at other enemies. The flies inside would push the container to a nearby enemy like a homing device, and upon impact they break out and start flying all around enemies, biting them to Kingdom come. I can understand that this would be more suited for a 3D game like DK64, but I think it's a humorous idea nonetheless.

2 - Homer would be just like any other animal buddy, and would be large enough for the Kongs to ride on. It would be used in levels that'd require a flying animal buddy, like Squawks, but could fly in all directions instead of having to push a button continuously to keep afloat. Again it'd have the ability to bite enemies to kill them.

Sound good?

Heh... Flies? The idea isn't bad, but ew, flies. Those aren't cute! And even if the fly were cute somehow, it's still a fly, filled with disgusting diseases and garbage. I don't want to touch that thing!! How about some other insect that isn't so filthy?

My old idea about the hummingbird actually matches your 2nd idea, except the hummingbird with its long thin beak played pretty much exactly like Enguarde, but in the air. Although I could see a flying animal buddy where you'd hold down the button to fly instead of repeatedly pressing it, that could work well for little insect wings.

LOL, that's like asking why monkeys are riding on a giant spider. xD

I should probably rephrase part of what I said. For Homer to fly, it wouldn't be holding onto a button, it'd fly in one space when nothing is pressed, and then move when holding down on a direction on the analog stick. Basically control-wise, it'd be sort of a carbon-copy of Enguarde, minus the fact that instead of attacking on impact, you press a button to make it bite enemies.

For the heck of it, here's a sketch I made based on Homer the Horsefly (however it mostly covers the 1st idea, I've yet to draw DK riding the larger variation) - [link]

He could be a minigame only animal buddy.

My brother and I figured the poor aliasing of the Wii wouldn't be able to handle a Zebra, haha, too stressful on the eyes.

Perhaps a gazelle would work better.

Perhaps the 3DS then?

3DS has better shaders, it actually would look much nicer. I'm sure it'll happen (I meant an eventual DKC game, the Zebra thing... who knows, would be cool though).

Honestly I don't think a Zebra is needed. Let's get animals with zanny new gimmicks, which of course you have already come up with many.

Yeah, the Zebra adds nothing to the gameplay aside from running fast or jumping far. Still, looks cute though.

I agree, a gameplay concept should be what triggers what the character design should be. Like that hummingbird idea I had a while back. Then again, with the addition of Diddy's Jetpack, Expresso's fluttering would be sorta useless, and an animal buddy based on nothing but running wouldn't be such a bad idea at all, especially considering the direction this game seems to be taking.
