This Truly Evil Transformation Villain is the infant stealing Gothel from Disney’s Tangled. Mother Gothel is one of Disney’s newer villains, but the story of Rapunzel is quite old, one of the classic fairy tales. Mother Gothel is probably one of Disney’s most selfish characters. She not only stole a baby, but lied to her for her entire life and kept her locked away from the world for her own selfish desire to stay in her prime of youth and beauty. In all of my Transformations I try to show the “tool” used by the villain to transform; Ursula’s shell, Jafar’s staff. Gothel was a unique instance where her method of transforming into youth is actually another character.
I debated on just using the flower in the center of the piece, but I thought it was a great opportunity to show the pain inflicted on Rapunzel. I played around with how to incorporate the flower and then I realized that Rapunzel and the flower are one. Why not make them one kind of “object.” Using the flower and Rapunzel, I made the old Gothel focusing on the flower (as we see in the beginning of the movie) while young Gothel focused on the girl (which is the majority of the movie).
As the piece came together, I really didn’t know what I was going to do for the background. I was just kind of ignored it for as long as I could. I had it in the back of my mind to place them in the woods. I pictured the scene where Gothel sings “Mother knows best reprise.” But at the last minute I thought of ways to make Rapunzel feel and look trapped. I used a damask pattern to imply wallpaper. This wallpaper is actually nowhere in the movie, but I actually based it off of Gothel’s dress fabric. I wanted it to be very dark with Rapunzel as the only light being smothered by darkness.
