Description Another image from my afternoon shoot at Craigs Hut in Alpine Victoria. For me this shot truly captures the essence of High country living. Standing on top of a rock to get the angle I could almost picture how life was back in the day.

This image was stitched in PTGui and I then purposely bent (curved) the image to replicate the lens distortion you get if I had taken the shot with a Noblex medium format film camera. I then cropped the image to a 2.4 to 1 ratio as well, as thats the format the camera shoots. Boy you got to love the digital camera world... so many formats in once single camera.

Canon 5D Mark II | 6 image stitch, no grads just great glass and light and bugger all post production.

I have always loved the movie (the first one anyway) but I didn't realize that Craig's Hut was a place you could visit. Was it built for the movie or is it a place of historical significance?

It was built for the movie. Burnt down recently and we re built.

And again this is probably the best photo of Craig's Hut I have ever seen.

I really want to visit this place after seeing all your photos, I love how the light reflects off the hut and the way you've composed this but not as good as the one where you've used the fence through the frame to balance the composition

Yea just trying different looks and perspectives. I would have liked to arrive an hour earlier to really research. I hate turning up and having to shoot straight away.

I know what you mean, I guess I'm lucky living right on the beach with it at my door step, sometimes I forget how lucky I am

I have been lucky to live right on the beach as well for most of my shooting career and boy you hardly miss a good sunrise or sunset as you can see the clouds formations on the horizon. Boy I miss that luxury.

P.S. Thanks for letting me know that this was from the Man From Snowy River (or at least sort of). I performed the theme music from that movie in a piano recital.

You obviously have a huge knowledge of photography. I have been reading the your comments about the different film formats you have been creating with your digital cameras and I just don't understand. The words make sense...I'm just not familiar with the other cameras. You would have to be to know that one takes a curvier photo or...

Thanks for all the details in your descriptions.

Your welcome.. yea shooting digital and cropping to film formats is great. A bit of knowledge and how film cameras work lets you put a bit of a creative flare on things, but you dont really need to know those small technical things. But I do recommend cropping to a film format if you shot stitched images.

My camera will do stitched images although I have never used the feature. I didn't really understand the instructions on how to use that feature and wasn't brave enough or curious enough to give it a try. Nevertheless, I appreciate your tip for the chance that I might do so in the future.

Stitched images give you a "panormaic view" of something. Is that correct?

MattLauder In reply to rifka1 [2009-06-10 03:25:29 +0000 UTC]

Yes the idea of stitching images is to get a panoramic view and it also allows you to make images that are high resolution other than shooting with a wide angle lens and then cropping. Hope that make sense.

Nice shot Matt. I reckon I've taken a picture standing on the same rock about a month after your visit. It is a location that seems to only have one 'Good Angle' yet can still be captured in so many different moods.

The panorama I posted on DA was taken closer to the carpark.

Yea it is a great angle. Wasnt much room to stand and try and level the tripod to shoot the panoramic. But got there in the end.

...but film cameras are so sexy
I just dream about Noblex or GX617, Gaoersi... I can't imagine what feelings will come when looking at wide panoramic color slide Fuji Velvia, taken with this sort of camera!

Yea looking at a great 6x17 tranny is something special. I'd go the GX617 over a Noblex though.
