Description It's been awhile since I have done an update on this. The project almost became a UFO due to a broken knitting needle, but luckily for all of us, "they" make more. I'm at the halfway point, which means I have completed the Duplicate Section and will now begin the Hero Section. Apparently when I began I started from the end and not the beginning and have to say it's precisely as it should be, seriously, WHO wants to start at the beginning of things??

So far I am keeping track of how many balls of yarn it will take to make this scarf because it doesn't really say on the website. Patterns for the Dr. Who Scarves can be located -->www.doctorwhoscarf.com/ When I complete it I will put that valuable quantity of yarn info here as well I love the Wool of the Andes so I went with that list, super not expensive and very lovely to knit with.

Knit Picks Wool of the Andes www.knitpicks.com/yarn-fiber/w…
Used or in use so far:
Thyme - 3
Amber Heather - 1
Bramble Heather -1
Tumeric - 1
Almond - 3
Currant - 1
Firecracker Heather - 2
Hollyberry - 1 (this is for one end and is only for approx 15 rows, which didn't really have a yarn color per se, so I closely inspected Tom Baker shots with the scarf to determine the most suitable "burgundy" and this one fits nicely

This is the main reason why I'm learning to knit. I would love to knit this for myself, though I might do the original one.

The Garter Stitch is the easiest to do and once you have that down you can do ANYTHING. Β It's all knit (no purl unless you choose to do the slip stitch edging). Β You Tube has EXCELLENT teaching videos or if you have an older person in your family nearby, now is the time to glean that information from them

Garter Stitch = the regular knit stitch, right? My mom and mother-in-law actually taught me the basics. I have a practice piece going, but I'm still not to the level where I feel comfortable making a Doctor Who scarf. I also have troubles holding it for long periods of time without my hands hurting. That just comes with more practice, methinks.

Mattsma In reply to HiddenWithin [2013-09-10 12:06:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Β It's easy and very basic The best practice you will get is to start on the Dr Who Scarf...you will have 8 feet of practice, by the time you are done you will be a professional at the garter stitch

I guess I'll have to learn how to change colors as well. What size knitting needles are you using?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mattsma In reply to HiddenWithin [2013-09-11 01:14:29 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh, you will be AMAZED at how easy it is to change colors, AND there is even a little picture tutorial on the website for how to hide your ends. Β I am using size 7 straights for the Wool of the Andes, I do recommend for you to use an 8.5 inch long needle or a 10 inch long at the most because you had said earlier that it hurt to hold the needles. Β On that I'm thinking either you were doing it wrong or the weight on longer needles was dragging your wrists down which isn't good! Β You should not be in pain when knitting. Β Takumi Clover needles are inexpensive for starters and very light unless you have some already. Β The aluminum needles have a tendency to bend which doesn't help your wrists and the tips get dinged up and end up having little gouges on them that catch at yarn and aren't happy making Β

I am totally excited about you going for this!! Β And PLEASE don't hesitate to ask questions, I love to blather on about it Β

HiddenWithin In reply to Mattsma [2013-09-11 07:07:41 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, I'm not really sure what kind of needles I have. My mom gave me a couple to practice with. I believe most of them are aluminum, but can't be 100% sure. I think the main problem is me probably doing it wrong. That and if I hold things for a super long time, my hands tend to start to hurt, which is why I can't cross stitch as often as I would love to.

I'll definitely have to look into making my Doctor Who scarf. Might have to wait a bit until the funds are available, but totally looking forward to it.

And thanks for all the help.

Heck yes, Tom Baker scarf! My mum is currently knitting the original one for me and I am SO excited for it! If you're doing the Shada one, are you going to sew the patches on afterwards? Either way, this is going to look amazing when it's done!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mattsma In reply to AlaskanAsh [2013-09-04 02:03:05 +0000 UTC]

I'm still debating on the patches, even though I have found some flannel that would be almost perfect...I might, I might not, I haven't decided, maybe I will ...... Β Let me know how long it takes your ma to knit yours

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AlaskanAsh In reply to Mattsma [2013-09-04 21:11:34 +0000 UTC]

Sewing on the patches would certainly be awesome, but since Shada was never aired you might end up having to do some explaining to people!

And I will, I probably won't shut up about it!

haha, it's actually a gift for *Katjakay 's mom who is AWESOME, so this is why I am torn about putting the patches on or not. Β So far I have not followed the knitting backwards directions, or knitting sections and sewing them on etc, it's just a brand new looking scarf. Β I think she will love it even if it is perfect and new looking
