Description
A sigh escapes from my cracked, dried lips as I settle back, leaning into the most comfortable nook of the tree I can locate. My aching body eases, and I can feel every muscle loose its tension and melt into the crisp, night air. The moon frames a beautiful picture through the leaves of the Sakura, one I seldom see. I become aware of footsteps behind me, but lack the energy and motivation to turn around and see who it is. If it's some kind of enemy, then today sure is their lucky day. Laughing quietly at my own laziness, the figure walks out in front of me. His silhouette is incredible in the moonlight. I respect the power of the image silently, actually bothering to move over and pat the ground beside me.
"It's about time you tried relaxing, Mayuri."
He tuts, sitting down next to me and sighing his own breath of relief. Days in the Squad 12 barracks are customarily busy, as was apparently obvious judging by the bags hanging underneath Mayuri's eyes. I can see them, even through the thinning make-up that has lasted him the day. "Not up for another all nighter, eh Mayuri?" I mutter, too tired to say much else. He nods, much more enervated then I. An inkling of guilt penetrates my conciousness, as I consider taking advantage of his exasperation, and trying for a display of physical affection on my part. The thought soon passes, as I know it would only serve to further his annoyance. "Mimura, will you tell Akon I won't be fit for work tomorrow?" My eyes widen slightly, turning to his face and trying to see any oddities. He doesn't look ill.
"Of course, Mayuri... Are you okay?" His silence acts as his reply, and I feel a bubble of apprehension well up in my stomach. His head lolls over, resting on my shoulder. I can feel the head radiating from his cheeks through my uniform, he must be ill... "Mayuri, do you want me to contact someone from the 4th Division? Even at this late hour, I'm sure someone will be able to--" He lifts a finger, touching it to my lips as my sentence trails off and ends prematurely.
"Just keep quiet, stupid woman."
I smile, leaning my head on his. "I see... In that case, have a nice rest, Mayuri." I know in my head that he's far to supercilious to admit that he just wants to spend some time with me, but part of me still wants to call someone out, just to make sure that he's okay. But that isn't what Mayuri wants. So I sit, staring up at the moon, allowing him rest as I slip my fingers in between his own.
It's a beautiful night for relaxation.
