Description

It's that time of year again! It's time for the definitive top twenty-x list of hypnohorny content on everyone's favourite (damning by faint praise) site for hypnohorny browsing. Brought to you by your must trusted purveyor/recommender of hypnohorny content and Dreamcatcher propaganda spreader: deviantart.com/maurislave.

We had... we had a year this year. Hence the late top 23. But that doesn't mean there wasn't good hypnohorny! I am continuously aggrieved by the idea that hypno on DA is dying - if anything it gets better every year. It was sad to lose some of our brethren (RIP to Dormiria you will never be forgotten ), but for those of us who have survived there has been no discernible drop in quality.

Now for DA RULES

  • No deviations that featured my OCs, were requested by me, or were very directly made for me. Each of these deviations is a joint rank 1 in my heart, which means that if they were included the list would just be all of those and it wouldn't be very helpful for anyone else. Doesn't mean I don't love every one of you which made one of those, though <3
  • One entry per person, with two exceptions: The first place gets honourable mentions as their 'prize', and the other exception you'll discover when we get there.
  • No "household names" - Pol, Zorro, Syas, Jimryu, Lapis, etc. I love them, you love them, but I don't see any point in including them on a recommendations list when every one of you stumbling on this has seen everything they've put out this year. That said, this is an entirely subjective category. Sorry not sorry.
  • And the only new rule this year: No AI Art people. Anyone who I am aware has started to use AI-generated art this year is banned from the list. I get that in our fetish the conversation about AI art is a bit more nuanced, because it means we're not using the images of specific people who didn't consent. But, I always lean on "public figures give implicit consent for the use of their image as part of the Faustian bargain of celebrity", and frankly, the people whose art is getting stolen to train the AIs also didn't consent. So, balancing that with the big point of "AI bullshit is squeezing the already very difficult space for professional artists to earn a living", I am an AI art anti.
Finally, not a rule, but a note: I am biased. My friends are going to be over-represented near the top of this list. I attempt to adjust down for bias, but it's impossible to do that perfectly. And maybe you should consider that I like them because they are good at hypnohorny, hmm?

The List Begins
Number 23 - Emma Hypno 1  by  BilliesRefriedBeans
Billies is, in my opinion, the best of the inheritors of Big Dorm's legacy of simple spiral-eye manips, with good pic selection and just a nice looking spiral style. This pic in particular might have inspired a burst of Emma-Myers-Mania in me earlier this year.

Number 22 - Snakes Invasion - 071  by Mylenya
Like with previous years where Mylenya got in here, this is a fairly arbitrary choice - but I do very much enjoy the kiss-into-brainwashing trope. But the Lea stories are always very nice, with multiple hypnosises and a bit of serial hypnosis too. If you can stomach looking past some of the more... Snake aspects of her work, it's great.

Number 21 - Love In Many Forms  by MonsieurChuchote
Chucote is a master of what I would call 'sentimental' hypnosis, which is not really my cup of tea even though I can recognise it's nice. But this foray into outright depraved horniness is also very nice. I am, however, saddened by "I have never played Xenoblade". Negative points for that. But also play Chronicles instead of 2.

Number 20 - Advanced Self-Realization  by hypnoman12
Does it help a story's chances to get on the list if you actively flatter me in the post-script? Yes. Was this a nice manip? Very much so. Was it a good story? It would have been, had Abed not left the narrative too soon. #justiceforabed .

Number 19 - MINscule Intelligence  by Heylamp
Office hypno good! Pic very good! Scenario very appealing! I'm not a massive fan of dumbification hypnosis, but I love the idea of clicking the wrong email attachment leading to self-hypnosis, and the brain-ballooon motif in the image is very nice too.

Number 18 - Gen 7 Mom Hypnotized  by HypnoApophis
Rotom-Phone used Hypnosis! It wasn't super effective because that's not how hypnosis works! Apophis is a rising star imo, with a very cute style and excellent taste in tactical RPG series. However, I chose this over Fire Emblem because I like the hypno-effects, and I have always liked the 'get hypnotised into removing the bra/bikini straps' thing.

Interlude - Mauri's Top 23 Other Media Things of 2023
Real Mauri-heads will remember that the Top twenty-x is often accompanied by a top k-pop songs of the year list... Problem being, this year was the worst one for k-pop in some time. IVE are the only good group of the current dominants, Stray Kids and Seventeen have been having a mid-off, Twice are on the bad part of their reliable two-year cycle, and even Dreamcatcher released their first truly mid album. So, I was left without 23 songs that I felt actually deserved a spot on a top 23 list.

So, instead, we're doing the top 23 of various media! K-pop songs, vidya games, anime, movies, and even a couple of other assorted things!

Number 23 - Knock by Lee Chaeyeon
Chaeyeon challenges Nayeon's record last year for 'most times the song title is repeated in a solo title track'. The song is decent and very catchy, and the music video is excellent. Finally dancing queen Chaeyeon gets a song which lets her show off her dancing (and is also good, Let's Dance also did that but it was unfortunately Bad). The shot in the room with all the mirrors is divine.

Number 22 - Raiders of the Serpent Sea
Something incredibly rare happened this year. Someone released a third-party d&d campaign and setting... and it was actually good! Lots of great lore, a couple of truly inspiring subclasses (the Sorcerer one is chef's kiss), a really innovative 'legendary background' system to pull people into the story which I will definitely steal, and fairly decent art. Not without its flaws - being 5e chief among them - but the best indie d&d content I have read maybe ever.

Number 21 - Age of Wonders 4
A worthy heir to Endless Legend in the "best fantasy 4x game" space, AoW4 has brilliant customisation options, the first divergent tech tree system that I have felt like actually worked, surprisingly deep combat, and an incredibly active development team.

Number 20 - Skip and Loafer
Real Mauri-heads know that Miko Iino from Kaguya-sama occupies spots one through four in my "fictional characters that are just like me fr fr" list. But spot five now belongs to Mitsumi Iwakura. This is a deeply relatable fluffy romcom for the tryhard nerds and also great for the 'realistic female character' enjoyers. Also a rare Japan W with unambiguously positive trans representation.

Number 19 - Bubble by Stayc
Speaking of fluffy, enjoyable media... Bubble is the best bubblegum pop song since Fancy (it's still worse than Fancy, Fancy is GOATed, but still). It's just nice. Also notable for a beautiful English version with shockingly good pronunciation and a single confoundingly included Korean word in the chorus.

Number 18 - Boston Strangler
Remember Spotlight? Okay, well, forget quite how good it was but remember the vibe. That's Boston Strangler. It's quite-a-bit-less-good Spotlight. But Spotlight was GOATed, so quite-a-bit-less-good Spotlight is still very much worth a watch. Also, Keira Knightly.

The List Continues
Number 17 - Kaho's Trap  by LesserSub
LesserSub came in at the start of the year, served cunt, then dipped. Is this on the list mainly because I am a huge Kaho Youtube enjoyer? Yes. Is it also here because "lose" was a favourite phrase of an old dom of mine? Also yes. It's still good, and I like the inward spiral.

Number 16 - Paparazzi  by susman01
The new kid on the block in the "Baret and ServeAndObey style", as I think of it, susman01 makes good stuff. This one wins out of a combination of recency bias and a very nice scenario. You're gonna go far, kid.

Number 15 - Regularly Scheduled Program(ming)  by ServeAndObey
ServeAndObey is one of the most consistent creators on here, and that fact that he's at 15 is testament to how good a lot of other deviations were this year (it's also testament to that one Sua manip being in a grey area of 'directly targeted at me', otherwise it would be here and higher). I remember when I saw this image, I immediately messaged him on discord to say "based". I love the expressions, and I love the spirals.

Number 14 - Spinning Away  by httpwwwcom
I am a consistent httpwww enjoyer. Love almost all of their stuff. Their art is so nice and cozy while also being very hot. This one takes it for reasons of being Naoto (based, rare malesub w), and because I really enjoy the lighting of the glowy eyes. Technically impressive as well as hot!

Number 13 - Facetime? From who...?  by irontale96
Speaking of grey areas with the rules, I'm not counting this because I posted the pic in a server but made no requests on the topic! But it did give us a brilliant example of the Facetime Hypno genre with a combination of irontale's creativity and Mesmer's technical skill. Purple spirals get bonus points because purple is nice.

Number 12 - Everglow Hunt  by MController00
MController is an account made for me with a lot of varied content and relatively obscure k-pop girls. But this manip is definitely the apex, with a very nice animation style. I love the transition from glowy to spirally eyes, and of course bonus points for a rare Everglow W.

Number 11 - Relaxed, Casual, and Comfortable  by CyrilQWellington
Okay, look. This is a certified Cyril Story. A woman gets barefoot and then a chair binds her in place and a hairdryer thingy brainwashes her. But it's a good Cyril story with creative touches I enjoyed. I like the date framing device which shows the descent into mind control, and I like the use of 'being barefoot as a sign of submission' as the main foot fetish thing I can totally get down with, rather than just describing the feet... doing stuff.

Number 10 - 2023MAR29A Zinnia's Spiral Ball  by mythkaz
As everyone knows, mythkaz is the 2D comic GOAT. The 'spiral pokeball brainwashes a pokegirl" trope isn't exactly original, but it's always a very nice concept for me when it makes the girl just obedient rather than turning her into a Pokemon. Zinnia is also a rare subject and therefore appreciated, and kaz's art is just very nice.

Interlude Part Two
Number 17 - Astrea: The Six-Sided Oracles
Astrea is a beautiful, innovative roguelite which is absolutely unashamed of its Slay the Spire inspiration, and the first game to surpass it in my eyes. The six characters all have a few viable builds, the dice are a fun mechanic, and it is utterly, utterly gorgeous.

Number 16 - Oshi no Ko
Picking up the baton from Ya Boi Kongming as "the one show this year that forces you to get a Hidive subscription", Oshi no Ko is amazing. It's from the same writer as Kaguya-sama and has the same amazing character work and dry humour, and if that's all you need to hear and you're somehow unspoiled I implore you to watch episode 1 with no further research. I'll also note that Aka-sensei's aptitude for deep research on specific topics really shines through here with the actually-educational insight into Japanese light entertainment (even if it's cringe when the mangaka character appears).

Number 15 - Hbomb's Plagiarism Video
If you know what this means, you've already watched it, but I don't care, it deserves the nod. An excellent takedown of the kind of guy you love to hate, with some strays caught by other annoying online people, all done with characteristic humour and compassion. Hbomb is the GOAT of the video essay, and this is honestly worth 4 hours of your time. And remember: Never claim credit for something you didn't do online. The plagriaism-seeking nuclear missile that is Hbomb will find you.

Number 14 - Guardians of the Galaxy 3
It is a cold but correct take that GotG3 is the best thing Marvel has put out since Endgame (I am now willing to admit it's better than Shang-Chi even though I loved Shang-Chi). The incredibly bold choice to make the annoying CGI rat the focal sympathetic character pays off immensely, the action is the best you'll get from post-Infinity War MCU, and it manages to be Actually Funny. Too bad Drax is now wearing his fourth different personality out of four, but you can't win 'em all.

Number 13 - Vinland Saga S2
Everyone's favourite really long anime about masculinity and vikings (mainly masculinity) follows up with a whole season about medieval agriculture and the rot at the heart of all economies built on exploitation and how it turns landlords into inhuman monsters. It might sound like I'm going a bit too hard here, but Vinland really is that thoughtful and highkey based.

Number 12 - Genshin Impact Fontaine Arc
This is not a joke. The Fontaine story has been the best Genshin has had to offer so far. Furina is an amazingly-written character, the unvoiced sidequests have fun characters and deep, interesting lore, and the underwater exploration is beautiful and fun. Plus, Furina has introduced a whole new powerful playstyle and Lyney is a twink in tights and a cape.

Number 11 - I Am by IVE
IVE is everything wrong with k-pop. They debuted half the girls before they were adults, they are overworked, they are so oppressive that Annyoungz can't even acknowledge that they were in another, better group. But despite all that, they simply do not miss. They absolutely own the concept, the MV is gorgeous, and the live version of the last chorus makes you ascend.

Number 10 - Reason by Dreamcatcher
Reason is a very self-indulgent anniversary song. Dreamcatcher are allowed to do a self-indulgent anniversary song. The only girl group not from one of the big three companies to make it to seven years without any member leaving gets to do that. The song is beautiful, the rap bits fitting Dami, Sua and Gahyeon is a great touch, the chorus also makes you ascend, and I would die for anime Boca Gahyeon in the MV (I am also in the MV multiple times, in theory).

Back to the list!
Number 9 - Pet consent  by hypme
Hypme is good. Femsub hypme is best. It is known. Honestly no-one does animated spiral effects like hypme does, and no-one can make an added-in-post pendulum look as good. Plus this time the concept really fits the source video, I really enjoy the look of the text as it fades in and out, and the use of the little doggy pendant is a nice touch.

Number 8 - Chika watches pretty spirals  by FabiusTheta
Theta is the GOAT of pixel-style hypno animations. That is a niche with very few people, but Theta's work is still GOAT-tier. I'm not a massive drool enjoyer, but I am a Kaguya Girls Enjoyer, and I am definitely a super-smooth-complex-spirals-in-background-with-really-appealing-and-pretty-Chika-art enjoyer.

Number 7 - A Happy Wife: Svetta's Choice  by SvettaK92
A masterpiece. One of the best to ever do it operating at the top of her game. The depth of description is peerless. The ideas flowing onto the page are transferred to your imagination perfectly by her unmatched skill. Such an incredible work will never be topped.

But actually the number seven entry for Svetta is Hypno Quicks: One More Sleep . It's just really nice and cozy in the way only Svetta can pull off while still having the hot bits not jar the general vibe. And the way she narrates the whimsical Stupid Tree Guy stuff is fabulous. Good work, even with a dose of recency bias.

Number Six - Stephanie and kaa  by Katsiika
Katsiika is a dark horse (or... dark goat) of the 2D hypno animation space, and this is a really good one. I am incredibly drawn to any work where Kaa finishes off his victim with the old tail between the legs trick after one formative hypno-story long ago (DO NOT ASK WHAT KAA DOES WITH HIS VICTIMS NEXT), but this adds to that with brilliantly smooth Kaa eyes, a very pretty well-drawn subject, and a near-perfect PING expression.

Number Five - Commission: Shiomi Kotone hypnotized  by Arugulachii
Arugulachii definitely teeters on the edge of the 'household name' scale given how many faves they regularly pull in, but I see I had Lapis here last year so surely they get a pass. The art-style is gorgeous, and this particular piece is just really well-posed, really well-drawn, the motion of the pendulum with the transparent after-images really appeals to me, the expression is perfectly mindless, and it's even a FeMC image!

Number Four - Full Circle  by Most-Wanted8
The Most-Wanted special is to pull out an absolutely banger effect and never use it again. But, the other less good Most-Wanted special is to post an image with no caption or a quick rp starter. This time, she managed to channel her generally-grumpy spirit into something positive with a short but very sweet story to accompany what I again have to emphasise is a technically impressive, appealing in concept, and just very pretty animation. Nowdothesamewithadreamcatchergirlyouknowyouwantto.

Number Three - Hypnovember by BaretKlap
Baret tried to negotiate me into doing a full ranking of his Hypnovember pieces. Number Three is the one that would be at the top of my Hypnovember ranking, so fair's fair. I'm fairly sure I negotiated him down to top seven instead of top thirty. If it was a different number... Oop.

Number Three point Seven - Hypnovember Day 3: Soul
It's hypnosoul-pilled, but it's based and hypnosoulpilled, with a rare W Brie Larson source pic.
Number Three point Six - Hypnovember Day 2: Picture
The flash in the eye spiral and the little spiral in the camera does it for me.
Number Three point Five - Hypnovember Day 4: Motion
The edge-of-perceptible spirals in the highly noticeable blue eyes is a nice juxtaposition, well timed with the seductive eyebrow raise in the source.
Number Three point Four - Hypnovember Day 1: Portrait
I only realise now this is the first four lmao. Anyway this is a super, super clean spiralwork on the not-actually-unmannipable Alessandra, with a very nice little mantra to go with it.
Number Three point Three - Hypnovember Day 30: Showcase v2
Always believe Mauri when she tells you the black and white version is best. Anyway, this is obviously incredibly technically impressive, and the MEW expressions don't hurt either.
Number Three point Two - Hypnovember Day 23: Within
A very nice source image, a very nice concept, and a pair of really clean purple spirals? Top tier work.
Number Actually Three - Hypnovember Day 9: Rumours
An expression that really sells 'mindless and happy', another very nice concept paired with an excellent script, and the same super nice purple spirals? Tippity top tier work.

Number Two - Primrose Hypno  by hy2300
hy2300 takes this year's 'really high spot because I want to shill them' position! They posted loads this year, and it's all really good stuff with a really distinct art style. This one doesn't only stick out to me because OCTOPATH MENTIONED, but also because of how well-drawn the subject is and how good the posing is with the strands of loose hair and the loose hands. Really, really good work.

Third and Final Interlude
Number Nine - The Devil's Plan
NOW THIS IS THE GOOD SHIT. Producer of Mauri-favourite The Genius returns with a not-quite-as-good-but-still-great reality game show about clever Korean people facing off in board game rip-offs. This time featuring the main characters of 'gigabased scientist who tries to turn the PvP game into PvE', 'platonic form of the hot K-Drama actor who is also really smart and confident', 'hot lawyer with excellent fits and moments of pure intellectual brilliance', 'failgirl actress who never gives up and gets more and more unhinged as the show goes on' and, of course, 'literally Seungkwan from Seventeen'.

Number Eight - Past Lives
A deeply realistic and poignant exploration of romance and the one that got away which is made even more impressive by the fact that it was the director's debut. This one really stuck with me. And I'm not even biased because of the actors. I (very respectfully) don't even think they're that hot, but they do an amazing job of selling the emotion and the truly heartwrenching "no-one's the villain, humans just gotta have feelings" vibe.

Number Seven - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Yoasobi's hold on me is so great that I fully watched this purely for the OP. But damn, it was worth it. I don't think there's ever been a 'traditional fantasy' anime quite this good. It mixes wholesome, funny slice of life, bittersweet explorations of grief and friendship, and truly excellent fight scenes. It's the whole package.

Number Six - Fire Emblem Engage
DO NOT LISTEN TO THE HATERS! Engage is the best Fire Emblem since the Wii era and I will fight you! It absolutely puts its worst foot forward, but if you can make it past the Firene arc you'll discover an actually-not-bad main plot, with characters who are developed through their supports to be just as deep and compelling as anyone the GBA era could offer - even the few 3DS-style meme characters go so deep on the meme it becomes funny (watch FAlear x Zelkov A support, funniest shit I've ever seen). Oh yeah, and on top of that we have peak tactical RPG gameplay, with just the right amount of innovation to keep anime chess fresh, and the innovation is the right kind which makes it interesting instead of gimmicky. Also, LYN MENTIONED.

Number Five - The Flash by Kwon Eunbi
This year, Korea's greatest single mother of twelve kids finally reached the mainstream. This was mainly because she mothered at a festival in Summer , but, we stan, and she followed it up with her best title track yet. The heavy-synth energetic pop style suits her voice so well, and the choreography is the most memorable solo choreography since Gashina.

Number Four - Oppenheimer
Mr. Nolan has still got it! The only really long film this year to actually earn its really long-ness (Killers of the Flower Moon was great, but it wasn't 200 minutes of your life great). Everyone in this acts the absolute shit out of it, and for once Nolan's obsession with practical effects and attention to detail pays off because it nails the Bomb Test scene. Also, don't avoid this film because you're worried it lionises the inventor of the biggest single war crime in history - "Oppenheimer is a whiny bitch" is a major thesis of the movie.

Number Three - One Piece Egghead Arc
Peak Fiction! In 2022, One Piece finished its longest arc yet (and that's fuckin' saying something), and everyone was wondering if Oda would land the transition into the first arc of what promises to be a half-decade-long finale (you're allowed to do that when you've been ruling the manga industry for 25 years). He did. The cartoony, imaginative charm of One Piece is on full display. As is the incredibly deep lore, as we bounce between the perspectives of half a dozen side characters and see Shanks Do Something at long last. And, as the final touch, the flashback that just finished is top three in the series, and shows the emotional heart which is One Piece's third main weapon. Stan talent, read One Piece.

Number Two - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Fuck recency bias and fuck Baldur's Gate 3, any game of the year list which didn't have this at the top is pure, unmitigated cap. "What if we took one of the greatest games of all time, innovated it in a way which makes it feel fresh while keeping all of the charm, and then added a whole creepy underground segment where the game feels completely different?" Said Nintendo. The answer: You make the greatest video game of all time.

But finally, I ask you a question: What do you get when you combine the 'plucky team on a grand adventure' vibe of Fullmetal Alchemist, the wacky adult humour of Family Guy When It Was Good, the deep and intertwined character backstories of One Piece, the pure lust for the male form of your favourite yaoi doujin, and Actual Educational Content About Industrial-era Japan?

You get Number One - Golden Kamuy Season Four , baybeeee
This season follows up a deep exploration of the loss of indigenous culture in the wake of forced assimilation and the industrial destruction of the natural world with... an adaptation of this panel . Peak fiction.

And now...
The Honourable Mentions:
Magna Cum Laude
Hehe cum. Also a very nice spiral and an iconic mantra combined with a rare perfect subby Chaeyoung look.
None Whatsoever (animated)
Based suit Bora, based pretty concentric circles, based image.
Wired Airpods - Rings (animated)
Honestly an incredibly strong contender for number 1 from the moment I finally looked at it. The animation just hits. But, the 'dialogue' is too simple to earn the top spot.

So, finally.

Number One - Order The Server  - sesimuos

The good sesimuos manips make you want to comment on 'panelling' like you're some sort of comic book critic, but the little cut-in to show the transition from waking to entering-trance is a beautiful touch to me. What follows is a fairly standard but particularly good execution of the form of a seismuos manip where a girl gradually triggers herself under control with the help of very hot thought bubbles and finally becomes completely blank and submissive... docile, some might say. That very nice execution coupled with a sexy set of IU source pics I had never seen before earns this the number one spot that sesimuos had missed for two years in a row but has always, on some levels, deserved.

Now What Should You Do?At this point, you should be overflowing with appreciation towards me, Mauri, for guiding you to nice hypno content creators and/or media for you to consume. You should display your gratitude by consuming this media, leaving nice comments for the creators and manippers, and then either:
  • Commenting below with your favourite Maurislave work of the year (top three if you're feeling funky but we all know there wasn't that much this time around) with effusive praise.
  • Committing to watch the next Dreamcatcher music video and the next Kwon Eunbi music video five times each.
  • Good night!
