If I remember rightly it's a waxed cotton.
the lashing was one style I found on the net - there are a few but currently my favourite is smilar to a blood knot.

this is just the art we have found, which if you think about it is extremely unlikely to be even close to the oldest art given it's very unusual location.

I recon people would have been making art on their bodies, tree bark, exposed rocks etc. for tens of thousands of years earlier than that.

you can through thier work - like their knapped tools and what they carried with them (ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96tzi_the_Iceman).
I'd like to be competent at bushcraft for similar reasons.
