Description Another old piece, from 2005 I think. This was my entry for an international competition to illustrate a new edition of Yann Martell's 'Life of Pi'. I'd read the book a little time before and loved it so I had to enter. I thought the shipwreck in the storm was one of the most dramatic - and visual - scenes in the book. (I'd quote the bit about the zebra leaping from the deck but I don't have my copy of the book here.)

The individual elements (zebra, waves etc) are collaged and then the whole image composed in Photoshop.

Thanks so much! Yeah winning that competition would have been an absolute dream! I have a copy of the illustrated book (with the guy who won) and it's lovely.

I should really read that book. I love the composition/overall flow, and how you made the zebra stand out... it's very eye-catching.

Oh, I loved Life of Pi! It was so beautiful and heart-warming and true. And your illustration is better than the Portuguese cover (we got such an ugly thing for a cover... almost distracted me from buying the book...)

I loved it too! Except for the ending which almost ruined everything... But I pretend that part never happened.

The UK cover was beautiful, and I actually met the illustrator who painted it. I got in touch with him and visited his studio when I was doing my degree and he was lovely. ^_^
