Description The daughter of Demeter, goddess of summer returns from the underworld, and spring arrives.

Acrylic on canvas, 40x32"

with many, many thanks to *signalbox for use of his photograph as a reference.

*update* i got back the print i ordered for myself and realised just how red it had come out, so i've fixed the tones in photoshop and resubmitted it. this looks more like the original, i think.

What's intersting is that the world she's returning to looks as the underworld might. I like that green grass is sprouting where she's kneeling down. This is a much stronger looking Persephone than is usually shown, and I like your version, since in ancient dramas and myths where she appears she is extremely powerful as goddess of the dead.

Excellent work! It has a native american feel to it for me with the girl's appearance and the natural life surrounding her. Great choice in colors, too. I love the background and the bark on the tree. I also love the way her hair turns into the background on the right. Nice balance and overall wonderfully done!

Smiles,
Andrea

You've done acrylic paint justice here!

Well done - i like it - it looks great - especially the woodland at the bottom of the painting - it is so realistic

thankyou, i think the foreground took me the least time to paint, mainly because it was so much fun to do, not needing to be quite as accurate as the figure. i'm really glad you like this!

The texture of the tree really gets my attention. Wow!!!!! Of course, every part of the painting is a part of a masterpiece, and I'm not saying that because of the reference or anything. It's a great painting, and deserves to sell many prints. All the waiting has been worth it to see such a cool image. Congrats, Maxine!

I take it, it's finally finished? And looking real good as I've already said before. And it's not just because of the nudity.

maxine In reply to MrIQ [2004-02-18 15:19:15 +0000 UTC]

well, the painting is finished at least, i might have one more go at perfecting the photograph, as i think she's come out a little orange in this one, but that's a minor thing. thanks for all the encouragement on the way through!

Looks like a nude photograph I saw called something like Walking from Wonderland or something. Nice, but I would use more contrasting and smooth, maybe lighter and paler colours, and darken around her eyes. Really nice peice.

thanks for the comment you'll probably be thinking of 'waking to a dream' by * signalbox , a good online friend of mine who kindly gave his permission to use it as my inspiration. i think the detail shows up better on the original, being a photograph of a real painting it's hard to get a perfect view, but thanks for the ideas

>3 Yeah it was that photograph. But I agree with you: you did well on this even thoguh the photograph, being a photo, has more detail- I think you made up for it anyways in your varied colour. ^_~
