The trick with black and white photography is to focus as much as possible on shapes and light. With no color to draw attention, its much more difficult to pull something eye-catching.
This photograph, however does just that.
On first glance, it's just someone wearing a white mask in front of a window. It would be easy to dismiss it except for the subtle look of sadness on the mask's face. It has the barest hint of a frown, yet the way the image is lit makes it difficult to gauge whether it really is a sad mask or if the lighting just makes it look that way.
I wasn't sure if the little tufts of hair over the mask worked. At first, I thought they just got in the way, but the longer I looked at the photo, the more I realized that they actually brought humanity to the faceless subject. They made the hermit look more like a mannequin, albeit it a realistic and beautifully shot one.
I'm not entirely sure if I prefer thinking that this is just a mask on a stand with a wig behind it or if I'm better off thinking it actually is someone under there. In the end, that question just makes the photograph that much more alluring, and it adds to the sense of wonder.

You know... I think I'd rather imagine. Leave that mystique. But thanks :-D
Nice job with the other mask photos, too!

good suggestion but i liked that it shows it's a mask and you can't tell what is underneath.
