Description Shipwreck
~Often found in rough waters, these mermaids feed on the souls bound to sunken ships, and seeing one is thought to bring bad luck. Some believe that the green flash seen at sunset is a mermaid marking your ship for a watery grave.~

I don't care if it's May. I'm in a Halloween mood and I wanted to draw something SPOOKY. (I promise this is the most supernatural/magical my mermaids are going to get this month. )

"So what does she do when she runs out of souls?"
Sinks another ship, of course.

I like to think that the more souls they consume -> the larger+stronger they get -> the more souls they need, and there are truly dangerous waters that hold these glowing green mermaids the size of great whales. (That moment when the Bermuda Triangle phenomenon is caused by a single massive mermaid.)

The fates were against me this day, but they did not realize that only makes me more powerful. The sketch just REFUSED to come together, and I erased and started again...goodness knows how many times; I lost count. At least seven. On top of that, one of the times I erased something was on my eraser (looked like carbon???), and it streaked across the page a good 7 times, right in the center of one of the pages, and would NOT erase. At all. I nearly decided to skip this page because so many things were going wrong, but I stuck to it, darn it! In the whole of Mermay so far and all of Inktober before that I haven't had a single scrapped page, and I'm SO CLOSE to meeting that goal! (Not to mention I only have one extra page in this book, and I'd rather save it for something completely unsalvageable - which this looked to be, but I think I managed to hide it well with the placement of the masts and ropes). But despite absolutely everything going wrong, I'm happy with the result. TAKE THAT, FATES. FIGHT ME.

Also, guess who forgot to include the text block again? To make matters worse I actually really liked the background (despite the fight I had to get it down), and now I had to block off a huge section of it, and I had no idea where to put it. I did what I could, but it was a bit of a lost cause. Oh, well.

Background done with Marabu Aqua Inks. Mermaid done with Reeves watercolors and Polychromos.
