One thing people almost never mention in any piece of fiction involving military operations is earplugs.
Your eardrums are very, very vulnerable, not just to the sheer volume of explosions but also to shrapnel, and hence earplugs have become standard equipment for any proper army.
Ferals like Ash need them more than anyone else due to their sensitive hearing.
Also, I have GOT to do more work on perspectives. It's one of my biggest weaknesses.

Earplugs can be very helpful, to avoid the flying shrapnel and a Big Daddy's drill smash. Also, that guy looks like Tron.

And plus, inside an airtight and packed colony, any noise will be amplified. Yeah, your ears will be hurtin' without earplugs.
