Description I'd like to share more of these little excercises I do. This is an experiment using the 'Real Bristle' brushes in Painter, something I'd never tried before. They're interesting, I think perhaps they'd be more successful on a painting that is really big, as the bristles show a bit too rough for my tastes. But then that's the point of this excercise, working outside my comfort zone and pushing myself to try something new.

Tho I have to admit I used the detail oil brush (just a few strokes, I swear!) on the head. I just couldn't stand to leave those few important details out, and it did make a big difference.

Well, here's to experimenting...

Painter, Wacom intuos and about 5 hours. Oh, yeah, I included the ref photo I used, taken at a local lake. Australian wood duck, female. I want to paint a male next, using the same brushes, but a larger image. We'll see if it helps

I"m allowing download for a close up look (sharing all my close up mistakes. ew scary!), but absolutely no image stealing or unauthorised use allowed! I know 99.999999% of you are completely trustworthy, those who aren't, be warned.

It came out very nice, but I see what you mean when you said it came out a little rough. But it's certainly better then anything I could have done. ^^

Thanks! I can see lots of mistakes in the form, but I think it was a successful practice session anyway

wow really? You must have a good critical eye. I think it looks great, but practice is always fun. =] I just like taking a picture and trying to paint it..though it's usually not a succes. haha.

I like the brush strokes. Going to spend some time studying this.

Hi Sandi I like them too, but it would have been a much quicker painting if I understood how to handle the brush a bit better. I ended up using the brush itself to blend and it felt like I covered the whole form of the duck several times before I was halfway satisfied...

I hope you'll try some experiments with digital, I think you'd enjoy playing around with different settings. It's interesting how the brushes can completely change simply by playing around with the settings, especially opacity and size

I will play, although I'm not sure Photoshop has what I would really like best. And Illustrator is very different than painting, although it does resize nicely since it's vector instead of rastor. What do you like best? I'll try to download a trial version to play with.

And no matter the medium I almost always find myself going over and over the form several times before I feel it's right. Drives me crazy and I feel like I'm just muddling through! But that's me!

Well, I like Photoshop, though I don't really know my way around with it at all yet. I've only had a glance at illustrator, and I REALLY want to learn vectors, but that's going to have to wait! I'm most comfortable with Painter, the brushes I used here were from the newest version (real bristle brushes) I don't know if I'd use them exclusively, but if you're really interested in them it might be worth getting the latest version. I wonder if it isn't possible to get older versions second hand? Like from EBay or something...I really liked Painter 9.

Yeah, I find anything I do digitally is a matter of painting, blending and redefining over and over to get where I want it to go. I've tried loosening up, but the lack of control with the first couple of passes at something is bothersome, and not something you have to worry so much about with traditional work most of the time anyway. It's a different style of work, but I've gotten used to it. But I do feel like I'm just flying by the seat of my pants through a lot of my work, it can be stressful!

Excellent, you always do such a nice job. I think he's staring at me.
Can I ask a question? It looks as though you are able to capture more than one color in a stroke. Are you able to do that or are you just adding numerous colors to each 'stroke'? That is the most frustrating difference, for me, in going from traditional to digital. It's driving me bonkers.

MBoulad In reply to WraithTen [2007-08-06 23:09:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank ya, hon

I didn't use the mixer much for this, but if you want to get different colours loaded on the brush at the same time, you can use the mixer palette, brush your colours on, blending the edges a bit as you go, then switch to the eyedropper tool in the palette (the one with the circle around the end, not the plain dropper) and pick out the colour combination you want to load on your brush right off the mixer. I hope that made sense. I DID have a play around with mixing colours during this excercise, but I cropped that bit out of this, I felt I had better control over the colours using just one at a time and blending on the duck...I think it would take a fair bit of practice to get comfortable using the blended colour technique!

Thanks! Well, this is actually the second thing I did with the brushes, there was a free form landscape on this same file that I cropped out, painted while I tried to get a feel for the different brushes
