Description Welll...I almost didn't post this. There's a funny story behind it, but I'm not telling, because it's probably only funny to me

I'd been studying some Medieval illuminated text on a lark when I made this, just kind of soaking up the prettiness of it all. I wanted a fairy tale theme mirror based on the idea of 'what the story gives us'. Anyway...it's not my most successful idea, it's too busy and...stuff. But I enjoyed making it, so I guess it was successful in that way. It was really fun playing around with the different concepts in this. And the mirror frame, based on illuminated decorations on old texts, was great fun, like doodling in the corner of piece of paper.

What does the story give?

Something precious, lost but found. But there is always a catch...(frog) I love froggies, you've probably noticed. Kisses to the frog.

Renewal (fairy)

A magic potion to heal (or harm), from a secret recipe. *imagine a soft witches cackle here* (dark lady lower right)

A pretty apple for you my dear (treachery, old hag with apple)

Hope to escape an unjust confinement (princess sends her precious necklace and a note tied to a doves leg from her tower window)

Danger! (what good is a story without it?!) (dragon)

Courage and perseverance in the face of extreme hardship (Bearskin)

A reward for just-bein'-your-good-old-self (little trollish fella with a bag of loot)

Whelp...it was fun, but I cain't guarentee it's a masterpiece

Love to you all, sorry I'm scarce. Life is busy, but good

I love the colours you've used in this And I like how you've done the streaky thing with the mirror (yes, I know, SO eloquently put ). And the frog! Yes, the frog is my favourite. He looks rather pleased with himself if you ask me

Thank you He does look rather self satisfied, doesn't he...he must be plotting something!

I think 'streaky thing' is a pretty technical term, myself. Why, if I were working up a price list, I'd charge extra for 'Streaky Things' hehe...

You all getting good rain out your way? We've had a lot the last few weeks (Canberra), thank goodness! Hoping for a rainy Christmas for us all

LOL! Yeah, lots of rain. It's been driving me nuts! Can't get the damn washing dry and if I try I'm sticking my head out the door every five minutes because the weather comes in so damn quickly So much for drought!

Heh, I feel your pain...I'm tired of running clothes from the hoist into the house...hang em up on a rack inside for a couple hours then run them back out when the rain stops I bought a cheap 'desperation' type dryer, it only dries a couple of shirts at a time, but when you need it it's better than wet clothes!

LynTaylor In reply to MBoulad [2007-12-13 01:35:01 +0000 UTC]

LOL! We have the dryer but I don't like using it unless I have to. As for the airer - it just takes up so much room. I'm always tripping over it. *sigh* Goodness. Look what we've been reduced to - discussing washing!

Aw, thanks! Well, it is a bit topheavy, though isn't it? If it were a real mirror it would tip over like that sign in Fractured Fairytales, remember that cartoon? It was so funny...

sovereign In reply to MBoulad [2007-12-12 04:51:50 +0000 UTC]

Nah I think it would be fine! Hmm fractured fairy tales, that rings a bell..I don't really remember it though!

MBoulad In reply to sovereign [2007-12-12 05:29:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, dear, I'm dating myself telling you this...it was part of the original Rocky and Bullwinkle show where they showed fairytales that were changed to be funny. I wish I could watch them again, they had a subversive adultishness about them that was hysterically funny....at the end a fairy would fly in front of a big billboard sign, wave her wand at it, and it would fall on her and squash her.

Um...you probably had to be a kid in the 60's or 70's to remember them

Haha well that explains it It does sound familiar though, maybe there was something else called fractured fairy tales too, I dunno.

DarthFar [2007-12-10 11:52:25 +0000 UTC]

Wow! this is awesome. A great selection of recognisable characters (I really like the frog prince, by the way, and Snow White's stepmother looks far more like somebody SW would've taken an apple from than that ghastly old hag she's usually portrayed as), and a beautiful mirror frame - it really looks varnished and 3D in areas - to go with it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MBoulad In reply to DarthFar [2007-12-10 12:52:44 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thank you Far, I'm so glad to see you around

Yeah, I can't imagine taking an apple from that Disney version, sheesh. I don't think Snow White was THAT dense.

I experimented with the frame to give it that strange look. I copied the frame layer, darkened the top copy, softened the focus on it and then lowered the layer opacity till it sat on top like a haze, then erased some areas to let the highlights shine through. It ended up with a funny sort of look I really like, and yeah it reminds me of that really thick varnish you see on old furniture sometimes. I'm really glad you noticed it

DarthFar In reply to MBoulad [2007-12-11 02:40:30 +0000 UTC]

I'll say! I was seven when I first saw that film, and *I* was scared of the old hag. You'd *think* Snow White had enough sense in her fluttery little head to be wary of bent, cackling old ladies with warts and arched eyebrows.
