Description I got inspired to grow sugar crystals on pieces from a magazine i was looking at. I created this ring, suspended two string between the opening at the top, and hung it in a sugar solution for about two weeks. after a little clean up, this was the result. very please with the first attempt, and many more ideas to come from this. copper, sugar, and string. approx 1.5x1.5

good for decoration, impractical though because the inside isn't smoothed out (yet?) Looks great though!

ah I'm really liking this piece! it's so unique and I quite like the combi of the crystal with the copper band.. but I'm still not too clear as to how you got the crystals to grow on the tips of the band? could you explain it please if you don't mind?

and maybe you could try adding coloured dyes to the sugar crystals to get more colours?

but nonetheless.. excellent idea!

well, basically, i made the ring hollow construction and between the ends of the band i put string, and you get the string wet, then sprinkle dry sugar on it, let it dry, then i hung it upside down in the sugar solution (2 cups sugar boiled into 1 cup water) after a couple weeks i took it out and cleaned it up a bit. similar process for the pin i made too.

Wow, that's really neat and a super-inventive idea!

Too bad the crystals aren't permanent since if they get wet they dissolve. However, an extension of this idea would be very cool - maybe by growing crystals like those from the crystal-growing sets they sell at craft/science stores. Perhaps you could figure out a way to make those types of crystals grow onto rings - thus making a more permanent piece and extending the range of crystal types/shapes and variations that are possible.
