This is very interesting. I have never seen light painting used in this way. Great job

I like your models a lot. They are just not 'obvious' models. Their real-ness makes the images, for me.

Pretty Cool. Light painting is awesome - I never got the hang of it myself. Can't wait to see more of your experiments.

what a nice pair [?] of sunglasses.
more than fance, I daresay.

I think that I'd say he's being blindfolded with a stream of light ... after all, what is more blinding than light?

mckenzie In reply to IslandJoe [2005-12-03 05:11:47 +0000 UTC]

It's just one form of light painting ... it's basically done in the pitch dark, with a flashlight, and then I used studio lights to photograph the subject.

Thanks for commenting ... I'm not gonna post anymore on here, but there are some more shots on my website.

Thank you ... it's really simple, actually.

All I did was shoot a 30 second exposure will all the lights out ... then I use the strobes to make the initial main exposure, and then in total darkness, either I or the model uses a flashlight to write text or patterns in mid-air. I just have to make sure that the light from the flashlight to the camera is at the same exposure as the strobe. Tricky to work out, especially when you I have to do a lot more people at different times, but it gets easier in the end. And focusing is hard too, because you have to do it before you turn the lights out, but the models don't also stay still. Kinda like shooting on 4x5.

Anyway, hope I didn't ramble on too much ... thanks for commenting.

Your lighting is always so fantastic. I really appreciate how well you describe your methods. You've given just enough so that I can try to make a shot like this on my own. I'm trying to learn to have better lighting and exposure. I think it's one of the things my photos lack. You really ought to blog about how you light your photos, you probably could teach a lot.

But absolutely fascinating... many thanks for the explanation
