Description This was made as part of a jewelry challenge, the topic being medieval jewelry. I used an earring that had belonged to my mother before she passed away, removed the clip back, and built an armature around it in the Eni Oken style (enioken.com). If you aren't familiar with her work, take a look at her site-great eye candy! And she has a ton of great tutorials, some free, that I highly recommend. This piece was made from gold filled wire (oodles of it!), freshwater pearls, garnet, Swarovski crystals, and the earring I mentioned earlier. I don't know if I am going to sell this one or not-the sentimental value is pretty high.

faving! thanks for sharing the tutorial link I'm a jewelry artist too...but my wrapping could use some work so i've looked at pictures to learn how to wrap stones the tuts will make it so much easier!

As for this piece Its absolutely beautiful! The queen of england could wear this! If you haven't already I wouldn't sell it. Because of the sentimental value, no one could put a price on it, and it belongs with you.

I really wanted something special, since it was made from a keepsake. I wish I was this creative all the time! Thank you for the comments!

Very pretty. I would have loved to see its construction process. I'm sure it's highly interesting.

Thank you! I wish I would have taken some shots during the making, but I was in such a frenzy of creativity that it didn't even occur to me. The woven pieces were constructed in 3 units around the centerpiece, with the 3rd small connecting piece being the last part completed. Thank it was just adding the bead chain and dangles, and making a clasp (which you can't see, I need to post a closeup one of these days 'cause it's pretty cool). But if you look at Eni's woven bangle tutorial, you would be able to see pretty much how I did it. It really isn't all that complicated if you know the basics of her weave.

I'm more of a sculptor than a beader, usually I just make up my own thing cuz when I see jewelry design instructions it's like they're written in swahili. I'm a really hands-on person. Wish it wasn't so though...

You're probably not giving yourself enough credit! If you can do the kind of sculpting that I've seen in your gallery, I think you would be able to do this. It isn't nearly as complicated as it looks. What you probably need is a tutorial video rather than a written one. Some people are better able to learn by visual rather than written instruction. If anyone ever offers classes in your area, that would probably be a good route for you to go also.

Amazing... and it's so touching that you used your mum's earring as the center! How long did it take you to make it? Is it heavy?

mdvannes In reply to Trinneko [2008-01-27 12:50:05 +0000 UTC]

It was actually one of my quicker wire weaving pieces! I was really inspired once I started it, and couldn't put it down until I finished. It's very lightweight, you'd be suprised since looking at these it seems they should be pretty substantial. The majority of the wire is 28 gauge, though, which is hair fine, so it really doesn't add up very quickly. Thanks so much for your comments! It's always nice to know someone else likes my work.
