Do they actually function as real door knockers or are the rings stationary?

They do function though I'm not totally happy with how it works at the moment. Its too easy to pull the ring out. I'm still fiddling with it to get it to where I want it.

**nods** Perhaps a straight rod that runs through the knocker's head/mouth connected to both ends of the ring (where it disappears from view) to keep it in place while still allowing it to swing freely?

Humm that would work for the right knocker pretty well but would be a challenge with the Left just because of the position of the ears. This does give me an idea very close to what your suggesting. One trick is that these are cast and molded in resin and the way the casting is done pretty much requires this to be added after the cast is made. (Same goes for the ring.) I came up with a partial solution this weekend which was using hanging wire to hook the ring through the back of the casting. Only problem is that the mobility is limited, it work snot but doesnt move as well as I would like.
I think 2, 1in long rods inserted into the ring would do the trick allowing the ring to rotate smoothly in the holes but not fall out. I'll be giving this a try soon, thanks for the inspiration!
