There are no words for how much I love the recent unspoken background arc in FiM that reveals Derpy as a former racer of incredible potential, somepony on par with if not superior to Rainbow Dash, whose career was cut short by progressively worsening vision problems. Undaunted, she grew up and took civilian work closer to the ground where her occasional crashes would be safer, but still proceeded to leap into the harm's way without complaint or hesitation every single chance she got, eye issues be damned.
This mare's the best kind of hero -- the kind that doesn't seek glory and isn't bound by duty. She just does what she's gotta do. Awesome art and awesome sentiments, here. Well done!

Dash got fast-tracked to the Big Leagues-- she went from Best Young Flyer to Wonderbolt in like three years, which has got to be an Academy Record!

I've long said that if Derpy were to get her own Element of Harmony, it should be the Element of Courage.
Between at least trying her hardest to stand against Tirek (Me, I'd probably have been flying in the opposite direction as fast as I could), her noble sacrifice to save Twilight in the movie, and just generally not letting her condition stop her from going out, staying active, and living her life to the fullest, I'd say Derpy is easily one of the bravest characters on the show.

Eh, she didn't jump in front of her. She was running behind were Twilight was standng, then Twilight was "removed" from the bomb path by RD and Derpy was hit. How come so many people misinterpreted this scene. Go watch it again xP

Derpy was at most three body lengths away from Twilight and running toward Twilght's front left leg when we last saw her. In order to run behind Twilight, she would have had to jink right by more than thirty degrees while at a full gallop. She'd also have to pretty much run through one of the Storm King's goons. So, whether purposefully or by accident, it's fairly certain Derpy didn't run behind Twilight. She either ran in front of Twilight or she ran through where she was.
As for why so many people "misinterpret" the scene? Well, its a very rapid sequence of events and most of what happens is implied rather than shown. For example: Dash's rescue. We hear Rainbow shout "Twilight" and see a streak of rainbow light just before the bomb hits. But we never see Dash grab Twilight and fly off—the whole rescue bit is implied, not shown.
The same is true of Derpy's "sacrifice". Going over the scene again, all you can say for certain is Derpy ran toward Twilight and ultimately got crystallized. Her intentions, and her actions in those last few moments, are a mystery. Since most people like Derpy, most people chose to interpret those events in her favor: i.e. that she was deliberately trying to save Twilight.

Yeah, I just frame-by-framed it and Derpy was nowhere near Twilight as the Misfortune Malachite closed in; she had to have been moving at speed, directly towards Twilight, to have gotten there at the same time as the bomb. Considering that she was just a random bystander civilian when Tirek attacked but was still the fourth Pony back from the point of the spear when the Wonderbolts and other Pegasi counterattacked... I don't believe for a moment this was just an accident.

No, I've watched it over and over. You see Derpy running in Twilight's direction in panic. The fact that her frozen position is a RUNNING pose and not a JUMPING pose, like she would have had if she would've jumped in front of Twilight, is proof enough that she ran in Twilight's direction in a panic. Wrong place, wrong time.
Also, she was BEHIND Twilight as Rainbow Dash flew in just in time to get Twilight out of the way.

Well you're right about one thing. I just re-watched the scene and it's impossible to say for certain that Derpy ran in front of Twilight deliberately. It might indeed have been accidental.
But:
1) You have no more basis for declaring that she's "in a panic" than I do to say she is acting deliberately. We simply aren't given enough information to judge Derpy's state of mind.
2) The phrase "jumped in front of "is an idiom, derived from the old saw about jumping on a live grenade. That she wasn't literally jumping is immaterial.
3) The camera zooms in on Twilight when Rainbow grabs her. Because of that its impossible to be sure of Derpy's relative position. But if she kept running in a straight line she would indeed pass in front of Twilight, not behind her.

You can see in her frozen state that she had a panicked expression, same as when she was running. She wasn't even trying to push Twilight out of the way, just running

Empty-bee In reply to SpokenMind93 [2018-03-02 18:51:34 +0000 UTC]
No. You can see a facial expression that could reasonably be interpreted as panic. It could also be reasonably be interpreted as excitement or desperation or gasping for breath. Without any other context clues, you're just projecting what you want to see.

And you're projecting a character that was in the wrong place at the wrong time to be a "hero" when she wasn't at all.

Yeah but at that moment in the movie it was all about panic and fear. Everything was supposed to look down. You also have to take into account the feeling of the moment. Every princess was taken down and the last one was about to, it's only right that in that moment a civilian was also caught in the blastfire. It's only at the end when everything is looking up that we see that Derpy was okay.

No I'm not. I already conceded that the evidence could support either version of events. But if you want to get from "either could be true" to "my version is the true one" you're gonna need some evidence to back you up. So far you haven't offered anything that held water.

What proof? Saying Derpy was running in a blind panic and you know this because when she's frozen she has a look of panic on her face is assuming facts not in evidence. Show me something that doesn't require already believing your theory to count as proof.
