Her mom moved back to Northern Minnesota when the relationship fell apart, and Alex grew up with skin a shade darker than her classmates, and brunette hair that stood out in a sea of Scandinavians blondes. She was the misfit that didn’t belong to any of the cool groups. Then Jack helped Julie move in and cousins became sisters. They studied together, with Jack, played music together, with Jack, and in time began to perform in public together, with Jack. And Alex could not have been happier. It was the best time of her life.
