It's still January for a couple more hours!
At the beginning of the year/month, I decided I wanted to do this, basically a "calendar" type series of artworks, featuring the Gems as monthly birthstones, and combining them with the monthly flowers, for added interest.
January's birthstone is Garnet, and the flower of the month is Carnations. I am not quite sure if I was successful at drawing the carnations distinctly as Carnations, I remember a lot of petals that were easy to get lost in.
White Carnations have the bonus symbolism of "Pure Love", which I thought was pretty fitting. Though the shading of them got away from me quite quickly and they are more of a soft red.
I tried a new thing here, as well; and that is coloring with Watercolor, and adding a layer to some areas of Prismacolor pencil. I like how it pushed the values on Garnet and enhanced my color at the point where adding more watercolor was basically impossible. I love the depth, and will continue to play with this method.
