Description So with Robert Pattinson of all people as Batman, and Warner Bros. still doing a bad job at taking care of their shows and movies that aren't in the DCEU, there's been a lot o buzz surrounding the upcoming Matt Reeves solo Batman movie titled "The Batman." Originally it was a DCEU film that starred Ben Affleck, but after Affleck jumped ship, it turns out that's it not in the DCEU, and now no one is sure of what to make of the film. First there's the recasting of Batman with Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame, which naturally started a lot of controversy, and earlier in the week, it was confirmed on what villains would appear in the first film of this trilogy. We've got Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face, Firefly, Riddler, and The Mad Hatter. So I'd say the time is right to do another fancast. Now I don't know if I'll cast other Batman villains that might appear in the sequels in a part 2, or even any Batman allies like Robin, Batgirl, Commissioner Gordon, Harvey Bullock, or Lucius Fox. However, if you enjoy this fancast, then let me know and I'll make a part 2 and 3.

Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin
The most dignified of the Batman villains, Oswald Cobblepot was born with an odd deformity that earned him the nickname "The Penguin." Despite being mocked by his peers, he grew up into one of the most wealthy crime bosses in all of Gotham. Eventually running into Batman. He's mainly played up as a joke villain in a lot of his appearances, but is still taking him seriously by the other characters as a threat. The Penguin has had at least three appearances in live-action. I haven't seen the 60's show, so I cant comment on that version. Danny DeVito was great, but the material he was given was...weird. I adored Robin Lord Taylor in the role. He was simply fantastic in Gotham and finding someone better in the role than him was hard. Although, in the end, I think actor Alfred Molina would be perfect for the Penguin in my opinion. I know he's probably too tall, but I don't think anyone would care about height as long as the performance is good. Molina is familiar with working in comic book based projects. Not only in live-action, but even in voice acting. He's probably best known for his role in Sam Rami's Spider-Man 2, in which he played Doctor Octopus. So we know he's familiar with comic book movies, and we know he can play a good villain. Not just Doc Ock, but he was also Viggo in DreamWorks Dragons: Race to The Edge. Similar to Robin Lord Taylor, I would want Molina to combine creepy, and uptight. The Penguin is someone who loves to show off. If he can make himself look better than someone else, he'll do it. But he can also be very creepy with how he treats other people. While he's not intimidating in the slightest, he's very smart, and knows how to manipulate people into doing what he wants. So obviously Molina can look the part of an intelligent crime boss, but I think good script or not he could play it to.

Selina Kyle aka Catwoman
Beautiful high class society woman by day, dangerous master thief by night. Selina Kyle used to work as a dominatrix if you can believe it, until the day she committed her first burglary. Selina seemed to enjoy the thrill of thieving, but she preferred to do it in a more Robin Hood style than your average thief. becoming the sleek and sexy, but sly and dangerous, Catwoman! This of course led her to become at odds with Batman, and as Selina Kyle, she works herself up in the ranks of Gotham's high society, and becomes quite interested in Bruce Wayne. And thus, the two have been at odds ever since. Catwoman has appeared three times in live-action. In the 60's show played by Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt, in the film based on the 60's show played by Lee Meriweather, Batman Returns played by Michelle Pfeiffer, in her own solo movie that we don't talk about played by Halle Berry, The Dark Knight Rises played Anne Hathaway, and in Gotham played by Camren Bicondova. She was well done in all but one of these, but for next appearance, I think Eva Green could bring something new to the role. She's an actress with a lot of style, and a lot of range. Recently she was in Dumbo and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, but she was also in The Dreamers, and the series Penny Dreadful. She's casted in a lot of dark and mysterious roles, which makes her perfect for Catwoman. She doesn't have the greatest American accent considering she's French, but hey, that didn't stop people like James McAvoy from appearing in something like Wanted did it? Eva's presence just screams "I'm hiding something, and I will kill you if you try to take it from me." Which is pretty much what Catwoman's all about. She's not that much older than Robert Pattinson so she could work easily with him if Batman and Catwoman were put into a relationship. I think if she was Catwoman, she could bring a more gothic take to the character. Similar to Michelle Pfeiffer, only hopefully with a better costume.

Harvey Dent aka Two-Face
Two-Face is Batman gone horribly wrong. Harvey Dent was Gotham's DA. One of the best in the business in fact. Unfortunately he had quite the split personality disorder, and this caused him to occasionally lash out towards others. Very violently. This may have been caused by two sided coin that he uses to make almost all of his decisions. He was also known for having a deep hatred for Gotham's criminal underworld, and the scum that ran it. So much that some people even believed he was Batman. All this attacking on criminals and the mob came back to bite Harvey in the butt. During a court case, crime boss Sal Maroni splashed a jar of acid onto the left side of Harvey's face. This act of aggression caused Harvey's bad side to be unleashed, and became a monster inside and out. He became the infamous Two-Face. One of the most dangerous crime lords in Gotham city. Unlike Batman, who's able to keep his dark side in check, Two-Face fell into the darkness and became what Batman never wanted to be. Two-Face is one of my top 3 favorite Batman villains, but unfortunately hasn't been used much in live-action. He's technically appeared four times in live-action. He was supposed to be in the 60's Batman show, played by Clint Eastwood, but he never made it past the script development. He was in Tim Burton's Batman, played by Billy Dee Williams, Batman Forever, played by Tommy Lee Jones, The Dark Knight, played by Aaron Eckhart, and in Gotham, played by Nicholas D'Agosto. Only two of those times was he actually Two-Face. I thought Tommy Lee Jones was ok, and I loved Aaron Eckhart, but he didn't really play Two-Face in my opinion, but more so just an angrier Harvey Dent. I know a lot of you are gonna disagree with me on this, but I'd cast James Marsden as the new Two-Face. Yes, I'm serious. I've briefly mentioned Marsden in the past. Mainly with his role as Cyclops in the X-Men films, and his upcoming appearance in the Sonic movie. Some of you may have gotten the impression that I don't like him as an actor. That couldn't be farther from the truth. He's kinda like the new Brenden Fraser. In the sense that he's a good actor who's one flaw is that he's placed in bad or mediocre movies. The only really good thing I've seen him in where he's actually utilized was Enchanted. And maybe Wander Over Yonder, but he was mostly comic relief. I really think he's due for a serious breakout role. Harvey Dent is a charismatic lawyer who hides a beast on the inside. Marsden's appeal as an actor comes from his charm, and likeability. He just looks like a nice guy, and that's what Harvey Dent is, a nice guy. However when he becomes Two-Face, he becomes a lot more cold and intimidating. Marsden, as far as I know, I haven't seen everything he's been in, has never really played a really villainous character. I feel like if he played Two-Face, he'd get to really show off his range as an actor.

Garfield Lynns aka Firefly
Oh boy, Firefly. This guy has two origins. His first one tells us that he was a film special affects expert who tried to rob a theater by faking a fire, but Batman and Robin stopped him. When he made a run for it, and Batman somehow ended up mistaking a firefly for Garfield's lit cigar, and ran in the wrong direction. Garfield saw this as fate for some reason, out of nowhere he decides to dress up in a bug costume and become a super criminal. His second, and much better, origin sees him as someone who had abusive parents, but was raised in an orphanage. Unfortunately, no one wanted him. As he grew up he became a pyrotechnics and special effects expert in the film industry, but as it turns out, Gotham's poverty problem has made him very, very poor. So he turns to a life of crime and gains a compulsion to start fires which soon is turned into a pyromaniacal obsession as a result of his abusive childhood. This causes him to become Firefly. A professional bug themed arsonist who teams up with Killer Moth at one point. Firefly is one of those more joke villains. For example, if you just needed a random villain for Batman to beat up, then you get Firefly. I mean that's not to say he cant be a threat, Batman: TAS and The Batman proved that, but the comics just treated him like a smalltime threat. One for the sidekicks to fight. He's only appeared in live-action twice. He appeared in Arrow, played by Andrew Dunbar. I haven't seen much of that show, so I cant comment on that, but I did see the Gotham version, played by Michelle Veintimilla and Camila Perez. Firefly was turned into a girl in that show. Which I didn't have a problem with since the character was made sympathetic, and acted as a former friend to Selina Kyle. They'll most likely keep him male in the movie, and to play him I choose John Gallagher Jr. Best known for his roles in 10 Cloverfield Lane, and Jonah Hex, John just looks like an insane guy in most of his roles. Mainly 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Belko Experiment. Both really good movies, in which John gave really good performances. He's perfect for the role of a crazed arsonist. Give him a flame thrower and he's ready to go.

Edward Nigma aka The Riddler

The Mysterio of the DC universe, Edward Nigma was a man with a serious case of OCD and an obsession with riddles. He obsesses with them so much that he gets a major thrill from them and eventually decides to turn to crime. Finding himself to also be a worthy adversary to Batman. Becoming obsessed with proving himself smarter than him. While definitely not the most complex Batman villain, he's one of the most entertaining ones. He's appeared in live-action on a three different occasions, but was set to appear in more films. Fun fact, Riddler was supposed to be in the original Tim Burton Batman film, and was supposed to be played by Robin Williams! I don't know about you guys, but that sounds awesome to me. Unfortunately, Riddler was cut from the film, mainly because Williams declined the role. A decision he ended up regretting. What a shame. Riddler was also meant to appear in The Dark Knight Rises, with both Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp considered for the role, but the character was cut in favor of Bane. Riddler was also meant to be in Batman v Superman, but was cut. Not sure if Jessie Isenberg was meant to play him, but that would've explained why he acted nothing like Lex Luthor. Frank Gorshin portrayed him in the 60's Batman show in his most famous acting role. Riddler's most famous live-action appearance is arguably in Batman Forever, where he was played by Jim Carrey. I liked Carrey in the role, but he didn't feel like the Riddler, more so The Joker in a different outfit. One of the most popular portrayals of the character is in Gotham, played brilliantly by Cory Michael Smith. Each of these portrayals brought something new to the character, and I was originally going to go with David Tennant, but everyone picks him. For me, I'll go for something with a bit more my style. I'd pick Neil Patrick Harris for the role of The Riddler. The Riddler is a real theatrical type character, and Neil Patrick Harris is a theatrical man. Known for his dancing and singing performances on stage, I think he could bring some fun to the Riddler that was missing from the live-action versions. I said Riddler is one of the most entertaining Batman villains, but when he's in live-action, he's either a total drama queen, or really weird. That's not a bad thing since it worked for both Carrey and Smith in my opinion, but Riddler is a mad genius with an "I'm surrounded by idiots" attitude. I like it when he has a very showman feel to him while also being the smartest guy in the room like in Batman: The Animated Series. Harris would need to combine the genius with the showman, and considering he was Music Meister in Batman: The Brave and The Bold, I think he would succeed with that.

Jervis Tetch aka The Mad Hatter
Jervis Tetch was a man obsessed with Louis Carrol's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and seemed like just an ordinary criminal who themed all his crimes after the classic stories. We only got hints of his origins here and there in the comics, but like Mr. Freeze, it was the Batman: TAS episode Mad as a Hatter that depicted Jervis as scientist employed by Wayne Industries who was tasked with unlocking the true potential of the human brain. Little did anyone know, Jervis had actually unlocked the secret to mind control. Also due to his obsession with Louis Carrol's famous stories, Jerivs had developed an infatuation with his secretary, who just happened to be named Alice. Jervis asked her out following her breakup with her boyfriend, and even wore a Mad Hatter costume for the occasion. Their date went surprisingly well, but the next day, Jervis found out that Alice had made up with her boyfriend and planned to get engaged. Heartbroken, he used his mind control technology to make Alice's boyfriend call off the engagement. When Batman eventually found the Mad Hatter, Hatter got the idea to use his mind control tech on Alice, forcing her to love him. Several fight scenes later, Mad Hatter is stopped, Alice is saved, and now he swears vengeance on Batman for ruining his fantasy. He's only ever appeared in live-action twice. Once in the 60's series played by David Wayne, and in Gotham played by Benedict Samuel. I haven't seen the 60's show, but I really enjoyed the Gotham version since the actor was clearly having fun in the role. For our next Mad Hatter, I think it's time Martin Short got a serious breakout role again. I haven't seen a lot of his more recent work, and I know he's kinda old, but it's Martin Short, I doubt that's gonna stop him. He just really looks like the Mad Hatter to the point where I cant stop imaging him with a big top hat on. He would also bring a lot of fun to the role. Seriously, just think about it, and tell me you cant see Martin going nuts with this kind of role.

So that was my fancasting for the Matt Reeves Batman movie villains. I actually had a lot of fun with this one. If you disagree with my choices, then let me know, and who knows maybe we'll have a lively conversation. I also want to know who you would cast in these roles. This will be my last fancasting for a while. Next time, it's back to basics as I'm finally gonna get another review out. So look out for either my review of Thor: Ragnarok or The Rescuers Down Under. And after, I'm reviewing a certain detective movie featuring Bob Hoskins. Until next time, have a great night, be safe, and take care.

After seeing how classy the Penguin was in Batman TAS I want to see him depicted that way again. And I agree the actor's height isn't a huge deal, there are a ways to work around that, or you can just forgot about it altogether. I have yet to see anybody complain about an actor being too tall to play a comic character.

I feel like Catwoman with a French accent would just make her all the sexier. It is a scientific fact that a French accent, along with the French language, it capable of making almost anything sound sexier.

My only concern with using Two-Face in a movie is the risk of retreading his origin story over and over. But it hasn't been done to death at least so I imagine this could still work.

Firefly in Arrow was another depiction of him as a tragic character. He suffered, wants revenge, and throughout all of it he is a tormented man. At the end of the episode, Oliver Queen actually still tries to help him, and Firefly politely declines and kills himself.

Casting a guy who was already a load fun to watch in Batman adaptation as another villain who would be a blast to watch? Count me in.

While the Mad Hatter can be a fun villain, I have also seen him be scary. You feel Martin Short could do scary?

Also, I did a pitch for a re imagined DCEU. You think you could give it a look and see what you think of it?

Yeah, I think that people don't care that much about physicality as long as the performance itself is good.

Actually, now that you mention, a French accent probably would make her sexier. Who doesn't love a smooth sounding French accent? Especially coming out of the mouth of Catowman.

They probably wont do an origin story for an of the villains. Then again, if they do an origin for at least one of the villains, Two-Face is the one who's most likely to get it.

Sounds like an interesting take on the character. I'll be looking forward to that episode when I start binge watching Arrow.

Glad you agree.

Well I haven't seen him do anything scary, he's more of a comedic actor. Although he was actually kinda creepy in The Prince of Egypt where he provided the voice of some twisted priest along side Steve Martin.

Very well, I'll give it a look.

Short was already the hatter in the 1999 Alice in Wonderland movie, but he COULD pull it off for a Batman film provided her has a good script and such. I just hope they steer away from the creepy pervert Hatter in the comics and portray him as a more sympathetic soul with a love of wonderland

Really? I didn't know that. I guess if he played the other Mad Hatter, that would give him even more of advantage in pulling it off if he got the role. Then again, like you said, the movie has to have a good script. I would also like to not make him a pervert, otherwise he'll come off as less fun to watch and more uncomfortable to watch.

oho yeah, I like his portrayal in the animated series by Roddy McDowell. He was a bit of creep sure but he had depth, he was layered, as well as a whimsical personality that made him fun to watch

My point exactly. You can make the guy love-sick, but don't forget to add some sympathy to the character, while also keeping him fun to watch.

indeed, I think that's what a lot of comic book writers forget. They try to make all the characters grim and dark but forget the element of fun

They said 20s/early 30s for Catwoman. Eva Green is 38. You can cross it off the list.

Hmm, I guess you're right. I didn't really consider age when doing Catwoman, and just went for looks and talent. Thank you for commenting.
