Description Yup, we're back with this again. What can I say? I love Batman. And to prove that I'm not done doing fancast. I was going to wait to release this after Christmas, but I figured that in the spirit of the holiday, I'd give you guys an early present. Everyone has their own opinion on how the Batman villains should be portrayed. Now these aren't necessarily for the Matt Reeves Batman trilogy or even the DCEU. They can and they can't. These are just actors I would love to see portray these characters at some point in any DC movie. Last time I casted Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face, Firefly, Riddler, and Mad Hatter. This time I'm casting Ra's Al Ghul, Poison Ivy, the Joker, the Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, and Bane. Well be covering some of Batman's most popular rogues here so buckle up. For my last fancast of the year, here's my 2nd Batman villains fancast.

Ra's Al Ghul
"As you said, Detective...this is not over."
Let start this fancast off with a bang with arguably the most powerful Batman villain of them all! Ra's Al Ghul! The demon's head! The leader of The League of Assassins! Don't ask how you pronounce his name. At this point no one is 100% sure. Some say it's raysh or raz, but either of those is acceptable. Anyway, Mr. Al Ghul is easily one on my top 10 favorite Batman villains. Mainly because he's one of the few Batman villains who intelligence is on par with Batman's. So much that he's one of the villains in Batman's rogues gallery to figure out the Dark Knight's secret identity on his own. But doesn't reveal it our of respect for Batman. He's also an incredibly skilled fighter. He's lived over 1000 years and has had plenty of time to train with some of the best fighters and teachers in human history. He lives so long through the Lazarus Pit. A pool of mysterious ooze that, once you spend a certain amount of time in it, can heal wounds, make you younger, and even bring you back to life. Now I will not deny that Liam Neeson was simply fantastic in the role of Mr. Al Ghul in Batman Begins. He killed it in that role. Same goes for Alexander Siddig in Gotham. I've only seen the first two seasons of Arrow so I haven't experienced that version yet. If Daniel Day-Lewis hadn't retired from acting in 2017, I would cast him in a heartbeat. He'd kill it as Mr. Al Ghul. I see a lot of people cast Ghassan Massoud in the role, and while he certainly looks the part, I haven't seen a single thing he's in so I can't really say anything on him. Jason Issacs would also be a great choice, but he's already played Ra's in Batman: Under the Red Hood. So I doubt he'd get to do it again in live-action, but a guy can dream. For my runner-up, I'd have to go with Pedro Pascal. Pedro is just a great actor. He's great in The Mandalorian, and I can't help but look back on him in The Great Wall. I look at him in that movie and all I think is "THAT'S Ra's Al Ghul." He not only looks it, but he's just a great actor as well. In the end, I went with Shaun Toub. I felt it best to go with an Arabic actor for this role given that Al Ghul is Arabic. While I haven't seen him play too many villains, I still think he'd nail this role. He'd be able to give that commanding voice that Mr. Al Ghul needs. Ironman showed he can handle comic book movies, and while The Last Airbender was a piece of shit, he still managed to be the best actor in the movie. If that movie had a different director, I think he could've been great in that role because we did see he can sorta pull of the physicality. At 58, I think it wouldn't take much to get into extra shape as someone who can match blows with the caped crusader.

Pamela Isley aka Poison Ivy
"Plowing up a field of beautiful wildflowers for that silly penitentiary of his. So his fate was sealed...with a kiss."
She's the tree hugging temptress who can seduce you in just a couple of seconds, and then kick your ass in just a couple more. Formerly a skilled botanist, she was injected with multiple poisons and toxins. Somehow she survives the experiment and became immune to poison. And for some reason, allows her to control plants and people. Unfortunately she also went insane due to this, and now spends her days taking revenge on people who have wronged her. While not one of my top 10 favorite Batman villains, I'll admit there's a lot to like about her. Like The Riddler, she's just a lot of fun to watch. She's only made two live-action appearances. I feel like with a better script, Uma Thurman could've been great in Batman and Robin, but alas, she wasn't, and thus, he we are. She's portrayed by three different actresses in Gotham. Clare Foley as a kid, Maggie Geha as a young adult, and Peyton List as an older adult. I really liked her in Gotham, but as for her next live-action appearance, I really want Evan Rachel Wood to give this role a shot. Best known for her roles in Westworld, and more recently, Frozen 2, Evan is a three time Golden Globe nominated actress who I feel like could capture Ivy's personality like no other. With her roles in Thirteen, Running with Scissors, and The Wrestler proving she could capture the most fascinating parts of Ivy's personality. The emotionally destructive temptress whose wits can only be matched by Batman.

The Joker
"Oh, Batman. If you had the guts for that kind of fun, you would've done it years ago. I on the other hand..."
The Legendary clown prince of crime. The Joker is one of the most iconic villains of all time. Just like his arch nemesis, Joker is one of those characters who anyone can recognize instantly. Like Santa Claus, Mickey Mouse, Super Mario, or Tony the Tiger. Now as for the Joker's origins, this this point, no one is really 100% sure on who he was before he became the criminal mastermind we know today. Not even the Joker himself is sure where he came from. Some say he was the son of a circus performer who was unkindly, others say he was an innocent child who was scarred by his father, others say he was a man who just wanted to make his mother, or in some cases his wife, happy, and some say he was just a thug who got some bad luck. Whether he be Jack Napier, John Doe, Jerome Valeska, Jerimiah Valeska, or Arthur Fleck, it seems that the most common and accepted origin is that he was a wannabe criminal called "Red Hood". As the Red Hood, he had a very faithful encounter with Batman at a chemical plant. One thing led to another, he slips and falls into a large vat of chemicals, making his skin unusually pale, and turning his dark black hair green. On that day, the Red Hood died (at least the old one anyway), and the Joker was born! Casting Joker was particularly difficult. The character has been played by many great actors over the years. Cesar Romero, Mark Hamill, Jack Nicholson, Cameron Monaghan, Kevin Michael Richardson, Michael Emerson, Troy Baker, Joaquin Phoenix, and of course, the late great Heath Ledger. If that man hadn't passed away, I wouldn't dare touch this role. I'd just say let him reprise his role. Off the top of my head, the only performance that I haven't really enjoyed is the DCEU one. Look, I have nothing against Jared Leto, but his Joker isn't exactly my favorite take on the character. Both in terms of acting and writing. I appreciate that Leto and the writers of Suicide Squad were trying to have a unique take on the character, but in my opinion, in didn't work. Maybe Leto's performance could've worked in a better movie but for now it just doesn't work for me. Four a new Joker, there are several great actors I have seen that I am confident could give great performances at this character. Such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hiddleston, Willem Defoe, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Skarsgård, and Crispin Glover. I'm convinced each of them would be a great Joker, and Glover came really close to being my final choice. I've heard he's stated that he'd be fine with playing the character, but since he hasn't been in anything big in recent years, he believes it's unlikely he'd actually get the role. Which is a good point, since he's been in mostly independent films in recent years. In the end, I had to go with one of my favorite actors. It's the one, and the only, Johnny Depp! I know that there's been some controversy surrounding Johnny lately, but the whole point of a fancast is that I'm picking people who could hypothetically play these characters in the future. With that said, Johnny is one of the best in the business. He can play the eccentric guy, he can play the weirdo, he can play the villain, he can play the mad man, he's just one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood. From Willy Wonka, to Sweeney Todd, to Jack Sparrow, to Ichabod Crane, to Rango, to the Mad Hatter, to Glen Lantz if you can believe it. I don't know how he does it, but most of the time, I can hardly ever recognize this guy. I think this casting choice speaks for itself. Depp is perfect for this kind of role. I am confident that he could capture the insanity, charm, and mystery of the Joker. Because who is the Joker truly but comedy, madness, and tragedy all mixed up into one.

Jonathan Crane aka The Scarecrow
"It's not joke. I assure you. It's the fear of victory, and the agony of...the Scarecrow!"
The master of fear. Jonathan Crane was subjected to experiments by his father while growing up. This caused Jonathan to become obsessed with fear himself and became a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum. Wanting to control peoples fear, Crane also worked as a professor at a university, but was fired for performing unorthodox experiments on his students. Only for him to turn on those who fired him, taking on the moniker of The Scarecrow. Scarecrow quickly takes up a major life of crime, and of course frequently encounters the Batman. Scarecrow, like Poison Ivy, has only appeared twice in live-action. First in Batman Begins, played by Cillian Murphy. Who was great. I really liked the Charlie Tahan version in Gotham. Both sympathetic, and really creepy. Unfortunately by season 4 he just becomes a lackey to other villains. For his next live-action appearance, Adam Driver is a good runner up until they inevitably drag him back into Star Wars. I also wouldn't mind seeing Jackie Earle Haley for obvious reasons. But I would like to see the one and only Adrien Brody take on the Scarecrow. Do I even need to explain this one? Besides looking the part in just about every way, he's an Oscar winning actor with many performances under his belt. Now Scarecrow is going to be wearing a potato sack on his head most of the time so the actor needs to be able to convey serious emotions with just their eyes. Brody's got that covered. He has some of the saddest eyes I've ever seen, and that's a compliment. Put a mask and a hat on him, give him a scythe, and he's ready to go.

Victor Fries aka Mr. Freeze
"Yes. It would move me to tears, if I still had tears to shed."
Now it's time for a major recast. Victor Fries was a humble scientist who's wife was caught with a terrible illness and was put into cryogenic stasis to keep her alive, and tried everything he could to save her. However, when the company he worked for shut down his experiments, Victor had to fight to save his wife's life, but in the process was covered in chemicals that altered his body and DNA. He became Mr. Freeze. A man who could no longer survive outside of below zero temperatures, and is now protected with a special suit that's armed with ice themed weapons. I think it's best that we forget the Batman and Robin Mr. Freeze. Now I enjoyed the character of Mr. Freeze in Gotham, but I really didn't like the actor in the role. Mainly after he actually became Mr. Freeze because that's when his performance lacked any personality. So we can either have too much or too little. What's wrong with both is my question. They got it right in animation and in videogames, so why is it so hard to get him right in live-action? If there's one thing I want to see before I die, its Mr. Freeze done right in live-action. The problem is we need an actor who could fit this very specific kind of role. Patrick Stewart was my choice for the longest time, but in the end, I went with Ralph Fiennes. Again, do I even need to explain this one? It's Ralph freaking Fiennes! Not only has he played great villains before, but we know he can play sympathetic characters as well. Like Johnny Depp he's able to take any role you give him and turn it into something memorable. Even if it's comedic. I mean have you seen The Lego Batman Movie? He killed it as Alfred. Safe to say, Fiennes was born to play a character like this.

Bane
"Did they not tell you about me, little turtle? I'm the man who broke the bat!"
The man who broke the bat. Bane is without a doubt the most physically intimidating of the Batman villains. He is raw power and strength personified. Bane's origins are skeptical. Apparently he was an inmate in South America who spent most of his life in prison. From the day he was a child to the day he became an adult. Only ever having a teddy bear as a friend, and eventually growing a fear of bats due to some recurring nightmares. At some point Bane was subjected to a series of experiments that, using a serum called "Venom" injected into his brain, gives him immense super strength and making him disgustingly huge. While this nearly killed him, he somehow managed to survive and of course escaped and went to Gotham after hearing rumors of the Batman. It didn't take long for Bane to use his genius to find out who Batman is, tire him out by releasing a bunch of Arkham inmates, then beat him to a pulp, and proceed to break the back of the Batman. Despite being a brute, Bane is smarter than he looks. He learned a lot in prison, and is one of the few Batman villains to find out Batman's secret identity. Bane has had only three appearances in live-action. I don't even wanna talk about Jeep Swenson, but I did like Tom Hardy. He was intimidating, he was smart, he had the best dialogue in the movie, and while at first I hated his voice because it just didn't sound like Bane, it honestly grown on me. Safe to say, Bane was great in The Dark Knight Rises. Bane also appeared in Gotham, played by Shane West, and he was basically a watered down version of Hardy's portrayal of the character. Nuff said. So I feel when it comes to Bane, there are to ways to do this. Because bane is usually being portrayed as ridiculously huge, towering over most Batman villains and bulging with muscles. So one way they could do this is that they just have some really huge guy come in and do the physical stuff and have some other guy do Bane's voice. If they do that, I don't care who they get to do the physical, but for the voice, either Danny Trejo or Javier Bardem would be perfect for it. If we'd have someone come in and do it Tom Hardy style, than Dave Bautista fits this the best in my opinion. I know, he's already wrapped around Marvel and Disney's little finger until his contract runs out and they run out of crossover ideas but that's why it's called a "Fancast." The guy just fits the role better than any other actor. Dave has transferred from a Dwayne Johnson clone to a legit character actor who despite not being in a ton of great movies, he's still able to make the best with every role he's given. And yes, that includes Drax. Dave was able to mold a character like Drax into a someone both hilarious and fascinating. You can't tell me he couldn't make Bane just as good.

And that was my 2nd Batman fancast. For 2021, I have at least 2 more waiting for you, and that's when I get to the smaller villains like Black Mask, the Ventriloquist and Scarface, Talia Al Ghul, Killer Croc, and Victor Zsasz. Do you agree or disagree? If you disagree than let me know who you would cast in these roles. With that said, have a great night, be safe, take care, and fear the Batman.
