--CHARACTER REFERENCE SHEET--
BASIC DEMOGRAPHICS
Name: Liam of the Bear, previously called “Boy” by Cassidy.
Age: looks around 19 or 20, though actually 3 months. (Cassidy’s original concept had been closer to 16)
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Languages: Common. Northern Barbarian. (which is not German, but gives him a Germanic sounding accent)
APPEARANCE
Height: 6’4”
Weight: a bit heavy for his height due to muscle mass.
Build: Bulky, but sort of stretched. Like he grew a lot taller recently and hasn’t quite finished filling it out, in the way teenagers who are strong tend to look somewhat half finished.
Skin: fair to ruddy.
Hair: so dark a brown it is nearly black, with a distinct wave to it, a bit greyish or reddish in some lights. It is the same color as the winter coat of a german brown bear, and falls to the tops of his shoulders.
Eyes: blue as a summer sky.
Other traits: Because his appearance was imagined as a secondary feature to his skills and personality, he looks rather generic, and a bit too pretty for the hardened warrior he is supposed to be. He doesn’t have enough scars to account for the 7 years of active battle experience he is supposed to have. The scars he does have, however, are long thin diagonal marks all along the front and sides of both arms.
He is also not entirely real, his body being made of the Mists of Insomnium.
Clothes: If they can be called clothes. He wears furs. A wide leather belt with an iron buckle holds some up around his hips, and suede strips hold other partial hides up his legs as crude but working boots. But these are formalities of weather and Cassidy’s modesty, and he is not in the slightest bit body shy, or afraid to charge into battle naked. Aside from his bearskin. He never leaves that behind, and most often wears it as a mantel or cape of sorts, with the bear’s head sitting atop his own.
PHYSICALITY
Demeanor: Liam walks like a man looking for trouble, carrying his shoulders wide in an aggressive swagger. He is almost always frowning, and even in stillness, he watches everyone and everything with suspicious eyes.
Speech patterns: When he does talk, Liam is very short and very informal. Often (usually) rude. Tact is such a foreign concept he doesn’t even know what the word means. If he thinks something of you, if he bothers to tell you, he will not mince words to avoid hurting your feelings. A nice mid baritone that he will deepen when he’s angry.
PERSONALITY
Overview: Liam is Cassidy’s protector. That is literally what he was created to be, and he cannot change that. But he doesn’t want to, so that’s okay. He’s a Barbarian who takes strength very seriously, and while Cassidy doesn’t match any of his ideals, he wants to help her become stronger. He is quicker to action than words, in spite of (or perhaps because of) having spent over half of his existence since creation trapped in Cassidy’s head. If someone can actually avoid his tendency for just hitting things to make them go away, he’s not actually entirely unkind. Just overly aggressive and guarded.
Passions: Protecting Cassidy. Keeping himself and his weapons in prime fighting shape for the protecting of Cassidy. Fighting zombies. Fighting in general. Being free to make his own decisions and act on them without anyone stopping or censuring him.
Fears: Cassidy getting hurt. Either through his negligence, or, especially, through his actions. He is more afraid of her being hurt than he is of dying himself, though his time living within her body taught him to fight defensively to try to avoid hurting the very body he was trying to protect. He is also afraid of Cassidy coming to depend on others to the point that she does not need him anymore. While he used to be afraid of simply disappearing back into her mind, now he is afraid of losing his purpose, the only thing to him that has ever mattered. To be fair, he is also afraid of being rendered powerless and unable to protect himself again, and this is paired with a fear-hate- specifically of Nick- and generally of sexual touch.
Strengths: Liam is physically very strong. He can carry hundreds of pounds without feeling encumbered, and punch hard enough to break a (young) tree. He is also excellently conditioned, and does not wear out easily when exerting his strength. He is stubborn when he has set his mind to something, and will not give up on a task he has promised himself to. He is very honorable, and will always keep his word. He also has a very very high pain tolerance. Because of his training as a barbarian, he uses pain to drive himself into a berserking frenzy that will keep him moving and fighting even after he has been physically hurt to the point where most men would lie down and wait for death to free them. Pain and adrenaline are friends.
Weaknesses: Liam is very bad at being social. He’d be more comfortable punching someone he just met in the face than shaking their hand, and he literally does not know how to be nice. Sometimes he even wants to be nice. He just doesn’t know how. And he has no idea what to do with himself if he is not protecting Cassidy. He is very easy to provoke into conflict. Probably the easiest way is to suggest that he is not real, or is simply a part or extension of Cassidy.
He is stubborn when he has set his mind to something, and will not give up on a task he has promised himself to.
He is also exceptionally reckless, since being hurt tends to just make him stronger and more blood hungry himself. He doesn’t know his physical limits, because he is so accustomed to ignoring them, and if he pushes himself too far while raging, he can actually die coming down from it, even if he is the one still standing at the end of the fight.
But mostly- because he is made of mist- he has to spend most of his concentration on maintaining a physical form, or he just dissolves into mist and returns to Cassidy’s head. If he knows a blow is coming, and is prepared for it, he has a better chance of being able to maintain a form through an attack, but even so, he is very very likely to be dispersed in a fight inside an anchored location. He is a little more stable in the mists.
Quirks: (1) Liam considers fighting to be the most efficient form of problem solving. Too much talking just wastes time, and he is not a dog to simply bark a warning and not back it up. (2) He also view fighting as a way to show respect to a worthy adversary, or bond with another person. It’s both a tool and a game. (3) He cannot stand sexual advances being made toward himself, or Cassidy, because he remembers what being raped feels like. (4) He cannot hurt Cassidy. No matter what. If his own life depended on it, he would sooner lose his life. (4a) He is not afraid to hurt other women, though if he feels he needs to.
HISTORY
Dream: Liam dreams mostly of Cassidy's hometown, and fighting zombies there. But he has been part of her mindscape all his life, and will also visit the same dream cities her mind will generate, though they do not possess videogame like oddities in his dreams. His dreams are very clear, and realistic, which just makes the surreal elements and dreamlogic all the more so. Everyone once in awhile -rarely- he will dream of a snowy north, forested wildlands, and the comfortable warmth of a burning campfire.
Homeworld: Liam's homeworld is Cassidy's head, and the zombie infested modern world she came from. But also the Northern Barbarian territories of the Greyhawk play setting for D&D. In Greyhawk things like Elves and Orcs and Fairies and Dragons are naturally very real, and far from the only things that are. His knowledge of the place is very academic, however, since Cassidy never finished making a full backstory for him.
Family/Friends: The only person who has ever mattered to Liam is Cassidy. She made him, and they have been together for forever, as far as he is concerned. He has very little sense of having family back in the Northern Territories, aside from the impression of a village, and a nameless father figure who trained him to be strong and uncompromising.
History: Three months ago (Real reckoning) Cassidy created Liam in the form of Boy, a highly generic character concept designed for the sole purpose of letting her pretend that it was not actually herself who was killing the formerly human zombies. That there could still be glory and valor and bravery in combat, when in actuality she was constantly terrified of being eaten. The more she hid behind this character though, the more he developed his own personality, focused around his sense of duty and role as a fighter.
Even though Cassidy never got to the point of character creation where she asked her character his name, Boy realized his name after only a couple of days, and held a quiet discontent over the fact that she never used it, or even asked what it was. Since she continued to call him “Boy”, he came up with creative, demeaning ways to avoid calling her by name in return, most fueled by his growing frustration at having to use her (less than physically peak) body to fight. The longer he existed, the more he fought to protect her, the more he developed feelings and thoughts of his own, but was crippled in the choices and actions he could make by being bound to Cassidy’s whims and choices.
A month ago, Liam’s frustration with the shared body situation came to a head when Cassidy met back up with her friend Nick, and the two engaged in sexual intercourse. In Cassidy’s body, Liam saw everything, and felt everything, even though he had in no way consented to the encounter. He was also more than happy to let Cassidy run away from the zombies that most likely devoured the man. He felt less guilty about Nick’s fate than he felt violated by Nick’s actions, though he does regret how much losing Nick has hurt Cassidy. He has never actually spoken with Cassidy about how he felt during or because of her interactions with Nick. But his resentment at being ignored, blocked from acting, and generally dismissed as a ‘character’ rather than treated like his own person has been building steadily since that moment, coupled with a wish that there was some way to separate the two of them, and for him to have his own body somewhere other than just in her dreams.
In spite of this resentment, he has never been able to actually hate Cassidy. He recognises that she is as trapped and hurt by their shared existence as he is, and that his protection keeps her from facing her own fears and growing stronger on her own.
When Cassidy entered Insomnium, Boy was actually very disappointed to find that the place did not work like dreams, and he was still stuck.
Within Insomnium, Boy found that Cassidy would rather gloss over his existence than actually explain what he was to anyone. The idea that he was an embarrassment further insult on top of being treated like a fiction, when clearly other people could tell he was there. As such, the last thing he had ever expected was for her to admit to Andrew that she was glad to have him around. That she actually valued him. And to realize that she meant it. That she would even ask for his help with a problem that did not just involve killing something.
He is not sure what to make of this change in their relationship, but if anything it makes him want to protect Cassidy more. From any pain, not just physical.
Since the Hivemind imagined by Andrew told him that all he needed to do was imagine himself in a real body in order to gain one, he has managed to figure out how that would work. It is still difficult, since he is so used to being in Cassidy’s body, but now that Cassidy has been becoming more and more friendly with Andrew, Liam has less and less of a desire to be part of that. The only reason he has not tried to rip Andrew’s head off is because he actually does want Cassidy to be able to feel happy.
Sleeping: Boy was still inside Cassidy’s head when the two of them fell asleep in the floor of a barricaded bathroom in a hotel. If he returned to that Real with her, he would probably find himself wedged awkwardly between her and the wall.
SKILLS
Primary Skills: Killing things, especially zombies. Protecting people whether they want it or not. He's also pretty darned good at picking fights and pissing people off.
Combat: Hell yeah. Both hand to hand brawling and swordfighting. He was not taught anything like a martial art, or boxing, simply to hit your opponent harder and faster than they can react to, and keep doing it until they are no longer a problem. He can and will maneuver himself to the most advantageous positions to do so, and will make ready use of the environment, but he is not a tactician. For sword fighting, he was trained in two handed greatswords, the favored weapon of Kord, the god of Barbarians. He is strong enough to wield them single handed in a pinch.
Weapons/Gear: none.
Unusual Abilities: While not being a supernatural ability, being able to Rage is far from common. While he can enter a Rage gradually through combat, he is also capable of working himself into a Rage before combat starts. He does this with a combination of self-inflicted, shallow wounds, and self-hypnotic focus, snarling and growling, to build up the combat high and adrenaline. So, generally, if Liam cuts himself, it's not because he wants to die... it's because he wants to kill.
He is also not carrying the immortality plague, so it takes his wounds the normal amount of time to heal.
Other Notes: Liam is, at least physically, a virgin. Bloodtype B. Uninfected.
