Again, I thought it was some sort of photo from the thumbnail.
I've been interested in hawks and general birds of prey for most of my life (or most of the part where I began to take an active liking to things). Sort of dropped off lately, but I still love watching hawks fly. I can still tell the difference from a buzzard and a hawk in flight from a pretty good distance. I've got a guidebook full of native Texan Birds of Prey. My favorites are the Red-tailed Hawk and the American Kestrel. Also the Merlin. American Kestrels are one of the smallest (if not the smallest) species of predatory bird in America, I think. They're a little bigger than a sparrow, and they've got beautiful coloring. Reds and blue-grays and tans...
Anyways. My late-night two cents.

Yes, kestrels are really pretty I like Red-tailed hawks myself. Funny etymological note though: in England, a buzzard IS a hawk: the name of the harrier like this one is actually a common buzzard. I assume, though, that you mean vultures. Once you know what to look for, you can tell the difference pretty easily I'm practicing my aerial sighting skills too: I bet not everyone has seen a Red-tailed Hawk from above!

Yeah, I'm not really sure what to call them. I remember being told that, but I couldn't remember whether it was against the term "buzzard" or "vulture".
From above? Man, that would be so cool. Just one more reason to get a pilot's license.

yeah... a couple times ago, I saw two red-tailed hawks from above. Much easier to identify, since the red is on the top of the tails

Can it take off vertically, or does it need a running start? Can it use a ramp to get up in the air if it's carrying something?

LOL I dunno. Depends on how much wind there is I've seen 'em take off from a post though.

They fly so strangely compared to other hawks and things though! Almost like flycatchers. They are beautiful.

Like a scissortail? Never thought to compare them. Both are beautiful in flight.

meganbednarz In reply to agape45 [2011-02-05 17:05:41 +0000 UTC]

Maybe not QUITE like a scissortail. But they do have a wide variety of flight maneuvers which are really neat to watch.
