Description Uggghhhhhh....
Sorry for this lovely little downer
Although it IS an idea I wanted to recreate since seeing Prisoners, I haven't quite been in the mood...
That is to say, I've for a while had to rely on the gloomy weather that came and went... And with that comes me puttering about when it comes to getting it done... BUT I DID IT SO, YAY ME!

Art wise: The lighting was something I REALLY wanted to try out... it was very dark and shadowy in this scene... I LOVE contrast shading and I've been lately trying to do it more/better
His head and eye positioning were a pain... 'Cause he's leaned back and his head's tilted up a bit...
That sink took SO FRIGGING LONG... that sink... uggghhh....

That's what was killing my time so much, I just didn't wanna leave that space empty.

Content wise: So, there's this... really heartbreaking moment from Prisoners (shocking, I know ) and it only lasts a few seconds... Keller Dover, one of the father's of the abducted girls, in a mad, desperate attempt to find/save his child, ends up doing some pretty horrible things. We, the audience follow him and, as much as we know what he's doing is wrong... we understand why. We understand that NO ONE knows what they are capable of until they're pushed so much...

And in this moment, we're reminded that, a few days ago, he was just a regular, blue-collar guy who would never in a MILLION years think he would do these things... And he's not enjoying it or anything!
In another movie, like Taken (love it ) the father was a former CIA agent; he's done this kinda crap before, and so we root for him kicking butt to save his kid!
But here... that kind of violence is not glorified; the guy has NO idea how to handle his emotions or his actions. It goes against everything he thought was morally right... throughout the movie, as he continues doing these things, he progressively looks... empty... just, cold and hallow...

So, to cope with what he's doing... he prays... specifically, he says The Our Father.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Keller: [Sits with his back against the shower. His eyes betray despair and emptiness; he speaks in a weary tone softly, with a slight tremble] Our Father, who art in heaven... hallowed be Thy Name... Thy kingdom come... Thy will be done... on earth as it is in heaven... Give us this day, our daily bread... and forgive us our trespasses... As we for...

[A chill runs through him and he shudders; his breath becomes raspier, and it seems to be harder to speak. His eyes now look almost fearful. He sighs softly and closes his eyes, apparently trying to focus or force himself to continue.]

Keller: As we f... [Tears well in his eyes and run down as his clenched lip quivers and he sniffles slightly, unable to speak further]

Me: "As we forgive those who trespass against us"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THAT PART!
HE CAN'T BRING HIMSELF TO SAY IT!

And it's at that moment he realizes his own demons; his own hypocrisy. How this whole thing is affecting him! It's killing him inside!!
He prays for forgiveness, but when this prayer LITERALLY calls HIM to forgive others, he CAN'T do it... and now feels he'd never be able to be forgiven either!

GAAAAAHHHH!!!

Anywho, please comment and enjoy!

lol

AND MUSIC!! --> www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uEuT9…
Note: The music played here is actually from two different scenes in the movie... mainly 'cause the majority of the music is so short and it only appears for a select amount of moments; it's mainly chilling silence, which makes it all the more real...

I think you might like it!
It's one of those movies where, especially if you watch it with family/friends, you can all discuss about certain things for a good 45 minutes after it'sΒ done

Oh goodness, thank you SO much for the kind feedback!
I really appreciate it
And I am VERY proud of this... I was also worried the tear would be... out of place or something
See this is the colouring I wanted to try for a LONG time but could never quite get it... now I got it and I won't be able to do it again for another while yet

lol

Again, thank you SO much for all the support!

Awesome!

Yeah I used to make them solid and light blue... then I realized, they are not that; they are clear
Ugh I used to joke with my friends "Don't you hate how you draw something and then you can NEVER DO IT AGAIN?! T_T"

OHHHH MY FREAKING GOOOOSSSSHHHHH!!!!!!!

I shit you not. I legitimately thought this was a screencap from the actual movie when I saw the thumbnail for this piece. I'm not joking. It's THAT. FREAKING. AMAZING. I think I'm gonna cry...

Hohohohoho, Megbeth, you have done it. You have created the most unique combination of realistic drawing and shading with a slight cartoony touch that I have ever seen. You should be immensely proud of this piece and the effort you have put into it. The detail is stunning, the contrast in the shading gives it a very dramatic feel, the lighting is absolutely on-par, and the emotions are gripping. (As always. )

I honestly don't know what else to say. There are no words left; I'm speechless. Looking back at some of your older (but still awesome, mind you ) works even from a couple of months ago, you can see the improvement that you've made with your skills. And I firmly believe that you have just about honed them completely with this piece. Not to say that your other works weren't FABULOUS, but this piece blows all the others out of the water, truly. There's no question.Β

HOW IN THE HECK ARE YOU GOING TO TOP THIS????

I just, I'm done. I can't. I LOVE THIS PIECE SO MUCH AND I HAVE NO IDEA HOW YOU'VE MANAGED TO CREATE SOMETHING SO PHENOMENAL, MEG. I JUST DON'T KNOW HOW.

I bow to your greatness.

OH MY GOODNESS! Really??
Oh, wow... I just... I can't believe it.
I FEEL SO DANG PROUD OF MYSELF NOW!!Β
I was very happy with this before, but after hearing your feedback, how it's a combination of realistic and my own style and... THAT'S WHAT I'VE ALWAYS AIMED FOR! AND HERE I TRULY ACOMPLICHED THAT?? Oh, gosh...Β  Β I'm tearing up as I write this; I've shown that much improvement?! Oh, wow...

I HAVE NO IDEA HOW I'M GONNA TOP THIS!! I'll try... it may take some fails and whatnot, BUT I'LL TRY!!

Thank you SO SO SO SOOO MUCH for this feedback... this comment... has made me yearn to be that much better!
YOU CAN'T?!
I CAN'T!!

Thanks again for all the support!
I REALLY appreciate it!Β

dear god I remember that part...I started crying, I couldn't handle it. Hugh was able to convey the agony of his soul right then, a soul who knows they have fallen very far.
HOLY HELL YOU DID THIS SCENE JUSTICE. the shading is incredible here, you captured the desolation, the dark and sorrowful feel of it all, the hopelessness especially.
When the thumbnail showed up on my deviations, I knew immediately it was from Prisoners, and immediately thought, "Ow...that scene."
And his face, the expression you have conveyed, is perfect. His hopelessness, his regret, his remorse, and his feeling of loss.
just, outstanding work my dear.

MegBeth In reply to TheLastUnicorn1985 [2014-05-06 20:00:27 +0000 UTC]

Omg you saw the movie?!
Glad to hear it!
Ohhh my gosh... this movie is so frigging... emotionally wrecking and so multi-layered and morally complicated; it IS like that stupid unsolvable maze dammit! lol
Yeah, he did a heck of a good job...Β I dunno how he pulled it off; I REALLY don't. I'm used to seeing him play the hero, maybe once play the villain, but anti-heroes are VERY hard to do, ESPECIALLY one in a situation that is all too real...
This movie must've taken a chunk out of him, though... I can't help but feel that.
Everyone did a bang up job in this movie, though. I mean, EVERY actor in this movie is a parent! well, except Jake, but, he IS an uncle, so STILL!!
Also, poor Terrance Howard... he got sick (like, he puked)Β at one point 'cause of the high emotional stress; he called his children EVERY time the filming day ended; he had to constantly remind himself he was just doing a movie T_T... All of them admitted, after doing this movie, to quote Hugh, they "hold their kids a little tighter"
And oh my goodness... you feel I did the scene justice?! FWEEE!
Thank you SO MUCH! It took me a while to finish this and I REALLY wanted to try darker contrast shading
I'm so glad all those emotions came through; I really was trying hard to convey those feelings of emptiness, despair, remorse, loss... ahhhhaaaaa
Thanks again!
I really appreciate it!

oh goodness! I thought I had told you that I had! silly me! Β  I totally agree, everyone was OUTSTANDING, and I do remember how Hugh said it DID take a chunk out of him, he had to reset himself a lot, lots of breaks between scenes. oh goodness! Poor Terrance! But I can totally understand him getting physically ill!
and you certainly DID do the scene justice my dear! you're most welcome and keep up the awesome work!

but still soo sad!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MegBeth In reply to Rhosgobel-Rabbit [2014-05-03 14:14:24 +0000 UTC]

Ugh I know... like, yes what he's doing IS wrong... but at the same time... how far would anyone else go? I like that it shows how much this affects him, that he's not immune to it... and... he's one of those characters that isn't a good guy or a bad guy; he's somewhere in between... And that's a part of what makes this movie so fascinating

I find myself talking about it extensively with my family and friends and we discuss certain issues and things and ask questions... to me, that's a sign of a GREAT movie...
And yet, just like Shawshank Redemption, another great movie... it was TOTALLY ignored at the Academy Awards lol

Anywho thank you SO much for the kind feedback! I'm real glad the shadows and everything look good; I really wanted to recreate that... The lighting in this shot was... so cool
I really wanna try more contrast type shading... but it's hard for me to do! I feel the need to blend it all and... ack lol

you flatter me too much...
This shading was A LOT of fun, albeit difficult to get right lol
But I'm glad you like it and find it comes off well enough

By the way, I'd recommend this movie if you like good Psychological, Crime Mystery/Drama films with HEAVILY morally grey qualities... Also, make sure you're not in ANY sour mood at all

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MegBeth In reply to Simpsonsfanatic33 [2014-05-03 02:12:40 +0000 UTC]

For me, I groaned out loud, as did the rest of the theater... but yeah, it showed all that was needed to show... And leaving some questions and scenarios open just enough for discussion; my family and friends... after the end we were talking about the situations and feelings and what-would-we-do and how morally grey this all was...

With the ending... I... get the feeling... based on the music that plays over the credits (which includes a variation of the musical score/cue when Loki hastily drove Anna to the hospital)... I get the feeling maybe Keller was also rushed to receive medical care but... maybe didn't make it?
I dunno!

I don't think anyone 100% knows for sure what would happen; but the fact that Loki is so dedicated, he most likely found him at least... I like movies that keep the audience thinking and talking afterwards

long reply is long... sorry about that
