Description Firstly, a decent title escapes me - please, good heavens, suggest a better one, anything will do! My imagination is currently all dried up!

Secondly, its been far too long sicne I submitted. Life has gotten in the way. Not sure whether I can really promise a higher flow of art, as I really want to sit down and write that novel, for real. So... yes. I'm not sure how it will all pan out really. I miss my drawing though..

Thirdly, enjoy! This was fun Its a portrait of the son of a man who is in my archery club. Very nice guy, I was quite surprised to hear from him actually. But I've had a lot of fun on this one. His son has been lovely to draw. Portraits are always really theraputic to do, I find.

Graphite pencil, as usual, mostly mechanical HB lead, with a bit of B - 4B pencils to darken up some tones.

This is lovely. C:
I've started, over the last year or so, to become really into portraits and drawing them, but I just... I can't grasp how you do them so well, haha (or to such a great level of detail). Especially the hair, fjkmklsgklsp.
I don't suppose you have any tips you'd be able to share? x3;

Thank you very much!

I think I was lucky, the first portrait I ever did just went so well and its grown from there.

I find the key to it is patience. I draw bits and bats here and there but I never do it all at once. I do the sketch (which looks NOTHING like the person, this is always the scary bit!!)... I do the base shading / colours, very quick and very rough. I leave it, go back to it, and refine a little here, a little there. I leave it, go back to it, and refine a little here, a little there. Rinse and repeat so many times!

You have to become very absorbed in it I find. You have to be able to notice and put down on the piece of paper all the different subtle shading differences and anatomical variations on that pieces of paper and this is why I leave it and come back to it so many times. You can't possibly notice it all at once, and everytime you take a break you notice something else you didnt quite capture and need to add to. It just kind of... grows on the page from a base, gradually built up and up and up.. You notice more and more with practice.

Hair is my bane. I do not like hair, not at all! I find it SO difficult. My technique on hair is basically "let's wing it and hope for the best!" Luckily this seems to work.

Ooh, thanks. That's really useful. C: Like so much of that sounds familiar - I start with the creepy sketch which looks nothing like the person haha, and then I get the rough shading, and a tiny bit of refining, but I can see what you're saying about leaving it and coming back to it. I should try that next time! Thanks <3

Ugh. Hair. I wish I could get as good as you at hair someday xD
