This reminds me of the time when my friend moved into her new house and it was infested with ladybugs. Don't get me wrong, I like ladybugs, but not in big groups.Β

Actually, I believe those are a different species.Β
Like butterflies, ladybugs undergo complete metamorphosis. They do all their growing as a larva, then develop into a pupa and then an adult. The adult ladybugs don't grow, and the larva look kind of like short black-and-orange caterpillars.Β

I don't know if you believe me or not, but I knew that already. I've seen those orange and black lady bug larva before. But for some reason it still didn't click that those could be a different species of ladybug.

Just thought I should clarify... I know a few people who used to think the larvae were pests. One lady was removing them and giving them to her chickens.Β

But are the larva pests at all? I don't know what ladybug larva eat.

Ladybug larva eat aphids, but lots more than the parents. They're even better than the parents if you're trying to get rid of aphids.Β
