Good point. Although I don't 100% agree on it being fact.

Well technically the Madai (Medes) he overthrew were also Iranian, but he was certainly at the forefront of Iranian history.

Mathemagic In reply to MehranPersia [2014-01-16 00:24:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, king is to kingdom as emperor (king of kings) is to empire.  Empire is greater than kingdom - Kurush was a Shahanshah, I agree - but his grandfather ایشتوویگو would have been something similar, since by his time Madai Iran broke free from Chaldean rule.  When you consider how large the Madai empire was, and the fact it encompasses much shared territory with today's Iran, it isn't unfair to claim that Kurush wasn't the first king or king of kings.

Now, of course, it wasn't as large as Kurush's Hachamanish empire - that's a fact.  But it was still the dominant force of the day - and Kurush's descendency from Ashtwagu directly links the Hachamanish dynasty to the Madai dynasty.

( Borders were different back then, so we shouldn't confuse total Iran with Madai Iran, Hachamanish Iran, and Persia.  Kurush founded the Hachamanish dynasty (which ironically pays homage to a previous king), and he identified closely with a particular people and province called Parsa (from which we get the term Persia).  This is similar to how all Jews are Israelites, but not all Israelites are Jews, how all Israelites are Hebrews, but not all Hebrews are Israelites, and how all Hebrews are Semites, but not all Semites are Hebrews. )

Kurush's major achievements were:

[1] to expand Hachamanish rule quite beyond Madai rule, since he turned rulers of Lydia and Babylon into Xshacapava (satraps), who would have otherwise been co-rulers to Kurush's uncles-in-law (brothers-in-law to Ashtwagu during his reign)

[2] and to rule with peace and prosperity.  If I had lived back in the day and I was forced to be a citizen of some nation, but was given the choice of location, I would have lived as a citizen of Ancient Iran because of that fact.  It would have been the closest thing to a free country - a free, educated, and wealthy country.

thanks for the history lesson but what are you trying to say

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mathemagic In reply to MehranPersia [2014-01-19 08:47:01 +0000 UTC]

That Iran's history is much, much older!

Not saying Kurush wasn't a great leader, if that's what you're thinking.

I just think it's more accurate to show how he was a natural descendant of the established Iran of his day, and how he himself would partake in giving Iran new leaders to come.

Massing together the largest empire to date in the world is a very impressive feat.

As with all other great kingdoms and empires, you had local tribes vying for power, with the victors becoming leaders and establishing new regimes.

The Haltamti led from around 3200 BC to 2700 BC.

I know what the history goes way more back the kurosh

that one of the things I love about my country that existed more the other country and that it has a much longer and much more interesting history

kuros was the one who started bulding an empire, bring people together making peace between cultures and it started around 500 BC where the land was living from around 5000 BC

Well, it's important not to let national pride blind one from the truth.

Today's Islamic Republic of Iran is very young, and has borders that were much different to those of the past.  Borders were less static than they are today.

The truth is that many of the other countries which are "younger" are in fact not necessarily so.

It's crucial to distinguish between history and prehistory - many of the lands are just as old as the others and contained cultures just as old as the next - but some cultures co-existed with each other before committing history to writing.

The oldest civilization we know of that had writing is the Kiengir civilization (Sumer).

Their cuneiform predate even Kemet hieroglyphs (Egyptian), Olmec hieroglyphs, and Harappan scripts (Indian) - though not by much.

It's too easy to blur national pride with facts, and many people do so in fear - they feel threatened that other cultures will falsify their history.

One important lesson to learn about ethnohistoric cleansing is that of Roma (Rome) to Qarthadasht (Carthage).

Qarthadasht was a direct descendant of Phoenicia - a very old maritime culture located in the Near East.

Yet when Roma took to power, it decided to rewrite history in the form of the Aeneidus - a story which recounts how Trojan Aeneas abandons Carthaginian Dido (the queen), and her suicide which follows.

This was more than likely a public brainwashing - a nationalistic account of Roma's success over Qarthadasht.

The Romans were brutal in their accusations - they would claim that Carthaginians sacrificed their own children (paedothysia).

Of course, with modern technologies, we are able to put these claims under heavy doubt.

I know that was a lot to read, but the point above is to counter:

"that existed more the other country and that it has a much longer and much more interesting history"

Some of the oldest cultures on record are:

Kiengir, Haltamti, Kemet, Eutresis, Sesklo, Harappa, Lothal, Mohenjo-Daro, Caral-Supe, Olmec, Clovis, Fosna, Nok, Huang-He, Yangtze, ... , and so many others.

Lesson:  sometimes archaeology tells us what written records do not, and sometimes written records tell us things archaeology does not.
