Here's another Faust illustration. Thanks to everyone for all the kind words on the last one, as well. I really do appreciate the support. It was actually my final project for Advanced Drawing last semester. Its pen and ink with watercolor on a 26" x 40" sheet of what I believe is actually printmaking paper. (And I had to cart that bastard around campus for a month, mind you... ) I was glad for the chance to draw these two in color.

For this one, I chose to do a sort of crossover between Faust and Dante's Inferno, since Hell is such a constant, looming presence throughout the entire story. The two scenes are also juxtapositions of different balances of power in Faust's relationship with Mephistopheles.

The upper scene is supposed to take place after Faust's damnation when his contract with the Devil is fulfilled. In the Inferno, because alchemists are considered figurative "diseases on society", they are punished by being inflicted with all manner of physical diseases themselves, which I used that mossy mass of plant-like rot that's devouring Faust to signify. And then Mephisto is there as well, triumphant over and still somewhat possessive of the soul he's won.

The lower scene is set in Cocytus, a huge underground lake in the deepest circle of Hell in which Satan himself, along with betrayers of every kind are frozen. I wanted to portray Mephistopheles as a sufferer in this panel because he usually looks somewhat menacing, but, as a devil, he is damned as well. Faust is, in effect, dragging him from Hell by summoning him and possessing him as his own.

Also, I realize I may be skirting the "mature content line" on this one, what with the nudity and side-butt in the lower panel and all that gross decomposy business in the upper one, but I don't really think that it warrants it... Correct me, though, if you think otherwise or you find it grossly offensive in some way. XP Thanks so much for reading There really was a lot that needed explanation this time. DX
