Description This piece is a portrait of artist *quickreaver that I did for pixelbrush.net's Faces event. Check out the final version of this painting here: [link]

Since I had to show my progress in stages as part of the event, I decided to put it all together to show how this went from initial sketch to final product. You can see how ridiculously often I change my mind on things, from the design of her necklace to the way she's holding the glass (although to be honest, I wish I'd stuck closer to the hand in step three and four, but I've never had a hand give me as many difficulties as this one did.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I actually prefer step three - it's less refined but it has an impression of voluptuous decadence to it that a queenly vampire might have.

May we please feature this resource over at #ClanVentrue ?
It's great to have readily available tutorials, and we'd love the final version too.
I think that they'd be popular amongst our vampire-appreciating members.

Dont get my wrong, the whole pic is great, and very believable facial features and neat colors but the glass...the glass is really eye-catching to me, it looks extremely realistic, especially that the different indeces of refraction are drawn in. You put some great attention to details!

Very interesting to look at. I've got a question for you, Melissa. Is there usually a piece of each artwork that you like to save for last? For example, when coloring a person, I like to color the eyes last; it makes them "come alive". Do you have something similar or do you just do it all as you feel like it or when it comes to you?

It's not that I like to save bits for last... but I inevitably for some reason end up painting hands and ears as the last bits. However, usually I work from whatevers in the back to whatever is in the front. Makes it easier when you're not trying to wiggle backround in around hair. This one was an exception since I decided to add the wall paper in last minute. Hands tend to fall into the "foreground" of most figures, since they're often in front of either the figure or whatever the person is holding... making them the last thing I would work on. Ears tend to come in front of hair, which comes in front of faces--So I paint the background, then the face, then the hair, then the ears last of all. Unless there's hair in front of the ears, then that comes last.
