My entry for 's 36-ContestBoth the content and composition of this image were inspired by the number 36. There are 36 butterflies, each one signifying a year of her life. They form the number three, while her hair is the number six.
The title comes from the following quote:
"The butterfly counts not months, but moments, and yet has time enough."
-Rabinhranath Tagore, Indian poet
And Sophie means "Wisdom"

Just a tiny bit of critique....
It sorta looks like her hair isn't attatched to her head. 
between the forehead and hair?
Other than that, I love the flippy-ness (^^), and the detail around the eyes. Nice!

I appreciate the critique, however, keep in mind that I painted this about five or six times this size, and there's a lot of small detail that gets lost when downsizing for the web. If you look closely, you'll see all the tiny little hairs that fade into her hairline.
Like monitor calibration issues, loss of detail is just something you learn to live with as a digital artist.

So beautiful! You did a wonderful job making everything in this picture appear "solid." Every angle is correct and believable -- its so hard not to draw butterflies flat sometimes. Amazing image!

Remind me the next time I decide to paint more than a few butterflies that butterflies are a pain in the neck to draw. You're right, it's so much easier to just draw them flat, wings facing the camera... but they look pasted in that way.

Awww....thanks! I was feeling very self-indulgent, and even though I've got 4, 5 commissions I should be working on, I'm wasting time putting fins on things. Always wanted to try a mermaid, though. I love the ocean. If the school districts were better on the coasts, I'd move there in a heartbeat!

I love the subtle use of 36 in the concept. I missed it until I read your description. The six in the hair was more obvious than the butterflies. I still spend a fair bit of time going over the image just appreciating the colour and movement!
