There was a discussion going on over at Epilogue about black fantasy figures--and this partially came out of that. I had a great deal of fun painting her, and I think she came out just exactly the way I pictured her in my mind.
To be honest, however, she was also inspired by a girl working the cash register at Wal-Mart. Her hair was styled kind of like this (although she didn't have quite so much), and she had such beautiful eyes (even though they were brown, not blue), I just had to make her into some kind of Fae royalty. I wonder what she'd do if I went up to her and handed her a copy of this and said "thank you for inspiring me"?

This may be one of the very few (good quality) paintings of black women here on DA. I was getting worried that there were none, which is quite concerning...
Anyway, I'm painting a black woman atm and was looking for perspectives from other artists and found your Cerulean. Great job, besides the fantastic work on her skin, I love the way she looks so peaceful and wise!

She's gorgeous! The lighting and shading are so whimsical - and god that mask design is stunning 
It's odd where inspiration strikes sometimes. I think that girl would be very honoured!
I was also inspired by the idea of black figures in fantasy. It's such a rarity - and I think that's sad because darker skin is so rich, and mystical looking. The curly hair styles are so creative too - talk about major inspiration! Check out my fairy ^_^ [link]

OoOoOooo... I really, really like this one! I love all of the sparkles and glitter. It really makes the picture fantasy. but what makes the work really come to life is her eyes! They are beautiful! I imagine that girl would be so surprised if you showed her this and told her it was inspired by her.

Lovely work - the skin tones are perfect, and from experience I know that dark skin is really difficult to capture well. The glittery mask looks perfect.

I really really love this. How pretty her skintone is against the blue and the gold. And her hair is beautiful. I like that you did a darker skinned character because you rarely see those around DA. Fantasy figures are mainly caucasians and asians. I'm black and I find myself drawing more caucasians tha anything. I've been trying to break out of that and start drawing other races too.

I respect you more now.....most fantasy artist don't render african fantasy figures, but you have and you've done it beautifully...i'm going to do it eventually as soon as i get a good enough idea. You did a very good job. I had a black women in the last live pose workshop. That was the first black figure I have done. The body turned out ok but I butchered her beautiful face. I am so used to working with white skulls; there is such a difference.
I would think the lady at walmart would be flattered, but you may warn her. In today's society, she may accuse you of being a pervert.
