AN AWSOME CONCEPT!!! To take the incintive provided by another and run away with it like this... VERY CREATIVE!!! Lol, and very wow-worthy. But not only is the concept great, but the piece itself is soooo well executed. you have a real talent for bgs and landscapes, along with your kick-ass character painting.

KEEP IT UP!!!

mystikaal [2007-07-03 14:52:56 +0000 UTC]

Werewolves are inherently sexy, what on earth made her think you couldn't do it? Maybe she was just goading you on cause she KNEW you would rock drawing a sexy werewolf.

I like your version, makes it so much more understandable that she was fooled by the wolf....poor little red. Though, if it were me, I'm thinking getting 'devoured' by this wolf wouldn't be a bad way to go.

I like how the background is sort of out of focus....gives the sense that his presence is taking her to a different time and place, or stopping time or something. Well done.

Challenge:

This is one of my favorites you've done. It really speaks to me because it represents one of my favorite stories. I especially like how it's not a traditional illustration of the story. I like how the wolf is a werewolf. It makes the story different in a way, yet it could still be the same.

rose-colligan In reply to SparrowsFlame [2007-11-27 01:46:06 +0000 UTC]

whats cool is that in the original medieval french tradition the wolf is actually a werewolf (and the story is A WHOLE LOT creepier/dodgy-er than anything by the Grimms.)

SparrowsFlame In reply to rose-colligan [2007-12-01 05:13:52 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that is interesting! Is there a place to read the original version (in English)?

rose-colligan In reply to SparrowsFlame [2007-12-01 06:18:51 +0000 UTC]

yes just go on google and look up red riding hood original rural french oral tradition. something should come up and ywp its in english there are two versions. the italian version where he wolf is an ogress (really odd i know) and the french version in which it is a werewolf. i studied red riding hood for a year for my honours so iv trawled through a lot of stuff on it!

I've been on a Little Red kick for a while now, so this is even more fun for that ^-^ By chance have you ever looked into the (odd, 80's) The Company of Wolves? Sort of an interesting take, although naturally they pick really creepy men. Oh well.
The details are to die for. All the life you introduced into the trees, the grass, the light in the air; I love the palette, as to me it looks almost like a transition - warm gold light turning leaflike to a brown with the dull purples you introduce in the shadow. The position of the Wolf is ideal - he's in shadow and yet not, contrasted against the light in the trees but still masked by position. I want to see how things run in your version of the story...

The odd bit is...

I really didn't think I was being all that original... :/ Perhaps I read too many modernized fairy tales.

I've got to admit that when I saw the thumb of this I was like "Red Hiding Hood? " and then I noticed the werewolf. So, it can't be Red Hiding Hood...
*Randomness is over*

Great background, everything is excellent in the girl and those little details (like the nest) I just had never imagined werewolves having elf ears

Amazing work, anyways

MelissaFindley In reply to Sofisofas [2007-04-04 21:55:43 +0000 UTC]

You were right with "Red Riding Hood'

there's all kinds of wolves in the woods. And more than one way to devour an innocent maiden.

Sofisofas In reply to MelissaFindley [2007-04-04 21:58:27 +0000 UTC]

So I was right! At least being eaten by that wolf would be better than by the dog-like wolf

Critique time! (btw, where the heck does it say if an artist wants an advanced critique on their work?? Seems like that has just vanished on me unless I’m just blind).

Okay, first off, the girl is awesome. She’s rendered very well, along with her outfit and drapery. I particularly am drawn to those puffy sleeves of hers. But maybe that’s also just to the intense red you used in that area too.

I think right now, the major thing that needs a little touching up is the background. The first thing that popped into my head when I looked at it (aside from loving the young lady) was that the two characters are too separated from their environment. Both of the figures have very crisp edges to them, but very few areas of the foreground contain similar edges. Even the closest tree to her is lacking the details it could have on it. At this distance, we should be able to see the texture of the bark more clearly, maybe even some tree fungus, knots, mosses, vines, etc. Any detail that would make it stand out a little clearer and help to place the characters in it.

Hmm...slight critque--the werewolf's left arm looks pretty muscular...I would imagine that his left pec would look a bit more muscular as well, but it could just be the way he is standing.
