It was the bright light of the Spring morning slanting into the cave that woke Lia, and as she slowly raised her head with a yawn, she noticed that Hagen was gone, the white fur empty. Acka was also gone, and so Lia stood quickly, shivering despite the warm fur still slung over her shoulders.
Stepping with stiff legs over towards the entrance of the rocky structure, Lia peered out into the brightness, inhaling a deep lungful of fresh, cold air. The storm had passed, leaving the forest quiet, peppered with droplets of water that twinkled prettily in the early morning light. She yawned again, shaking herself to cast off the last remnants of sleep, then stared out into the trees, pondering the location of her new acquaintance, and how long ago he had left. Perhaps he had gone as soon as she had fallen asleep? Maybe to go fetch raiders or guards? She flicked her ears in every direction, suddenly panicked and unsu

Lia was miserable. She was hunched under a slight overhang in a vain attempt to protect herself from the driving rain, her drenched coat plastered to her skin, and only serving to make her colder. She last of the snow had finally melted a few days earlier, so the rivers were already brimming with meltwater. This rain was sure to make them break their banks, and Lia dreaded to think of the chaos that would cause.
Acka suddenly swooped down from the trees; apparently his ‘sheltered’ perch was not as good as he had though, since his feathers were coated with droplets of water. The magpie hopped onto Lia’s back and huddled down, his neck almost vanishing into his feathers in an attempt to stay warm.
Lia looked up at the dark sky with a frown, then winced at the flash of lightning, which was swiftly followed by a rumble of thunder. She could only hope that the storm would move away quickly, but for now, she resigned herself to a night without sleep, and gazed
