I like to think that when he became Iscariot's new leader, Makube had some trouble getting the hang of things, and probably still doesn't like certain aspects of it as much as Maxwell did to this day. So this is Makube struggling with that, and after messing up a few times on an important letter he had to write, he took a break to read one of his dark Christian Magick Grimoires while no one was looking to gather himself.

Personally I was basing much of his extra character development on this off his prototype, which was a lot more fleshed out and looked exactly like him (to the point that he was even called Makube still). He had more appearances on the manga he was originally from (which is called "Susume!! Seigaku Dennou Kenkyubu", I own a physical copy of it).

On that, he was a black magic warlock priest who was a theology teacher, and used a shotgun rifle to blow zombies up, etc.. X3 Not to mention he was really kinda weird, PTSD and eccentric, and funny. XD

But anyway, I think he was actually a field soldier, much like Heinkel, Alexander, etc., who fought against heretics and the undead, before he found himself appointed as the new leader.
