Description I got bit by the "Disney Princess Colouring Book" bug! Yumedust made me do it! ;D [link]

It is NOT my lineart, I googled it, like the rules say and found a free to use colouring book page [link] and had a real laugh painting it! It was so much fun, so thank you yumedust!

The classical painting I drew inspiration from was more of a mash. lol! Tamara De Lempika meet Waterhouse! ;D

I'm pleased with it. I think it shows some development on my part. I'm definitely going to do some more fanart, it was too much fun not to! Here is the steps if anyone is interested: [link]

I did a reworked version

Surprisingly I like this version better - colours, contrasts, the all-pervasive green...

aww thank you! xD by the way can I ask if you use photshop to paint this alice and what brush you use?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

meMilly In reply to StephyGtz [2010-02-07 19:28:44 +0000 UTC]

I almost always use Corel Painter, I only use photoshop for colour correction and resizing.
The brushes I mostly use are the blending brushes, tinting and airbrushes.

The day I started using Corel Painter in stead of just photoshop is the day I started to be happy (ish) with my painting.

StephyGtz In reply to meMilly [2010-02-07 19:36:55 +0000 UTC]

really? wow then I must get corel painter hahaha I have hear amazing things from corel painter, so if know how to use potshhop then corel painter should be easy and the same?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

meMilly In reply to StephyGtz [2010-02-07 19:56:01 +0000 UTC]

Corel Painter can be a bit harder to get into. Not that it's a lot more difficult really just different from photoshop. At least my experience with it was like that because I started up with photoshop. BUT, if someone had told me what brushes to use from the start I wouldn't have found it so different. The blending brushes in Corel are absolutely the best. They all have some different quality, but the three I use most are:

Just add water
Soft blender stump
Smear

The two airbrushes I use are:

Fine detail
Soft air

And lastly the brush that is most like the photoshop brushes and perfect for detailing, lines and anything that needs a harder edge, the tinting brushes:

Basic round

I use other brushes sometimes, but these are really all I need.
If you decide to try Corel Painter out, which I really recommend you do, just ask me if you need any help!

really??? wow! hehe *goes to search free corel painter*

meMilly In reply to StephyGtz [2010-02-07 20:31:47 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, I was going to say this as well. In photoshop, if you want to merge two layers you have to mark them by holding down ctrl and clicking on the two layers then right click on the selected layers and choose merge.

In painter you have to use shift to make selection, and to merge them you click on the little icon to the very left furthest down in your layer palette, and choose collapse. Took me aaages to find that out, and I couldn't really find any info on the net about it.

Hope you'll have fun. Even if you're finding it awkward in the beginning, fight through it. The result is very rewarding.

*writes all the information on my notebook* seriously im lke copy and paste all the information you are giving to me xDD you are a wonderful teacher! and it helps a lot since im not estuding art of anything like this, cause in mexico this kind of things are not popular..so then everything I have learn is because of the internet and tutorials! and the alice coloring book painting I did was the 3th try on digital paiting so im getting closer I guess xD I simply can get the same result like yours or the aurora one.. maybe it was cause I did on photoshop!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

meMilly In reply to StephyGtz [2010-02-07 20:53:22 +0000 UTC]

It was really good, especially if it was only your third digital painting.

I don't know if you saw this already, but this is the livestream video of Katie De Sousa (Yumedust) painting her version of the Disney princesses colouring book. [link] I watched this before painting my own, and I found it very informative and helpful. It is very step, by step. And she's talking and explaining what she is doing.

When it comes to getting a good result, I suppose there is no short cut only practise, practice and practice some more. But Corel Painter really does help to develop those skills. At least it did for me.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

StephyGtz In reply to meMilly [2010-02-07 20:59:41 +0000 UTC]

Actually I saw the video, thats why I was getting a little tired cause I didnt get the same result as her but like I say is my 3th digital painting that means I need to do 100 more to do and obviously more practice xD but I really must get corel painter...god give me patience hahaha I must follow your advices haha since you are a great artist from what I have seen from your gallery haha

I know, it can be so frustrating when things don't go the way you're hoping for while painting. But if you start getting frustrated, just upload the painting to your scraps or something, give me the link and I'll see if I can give you some tips and help.

Also, you might already be doing this heh, but I've found that if I listen to good music while painting it helps me to relax and concentrate. Before I know it many hours has passed and I had a great time painting and listening to music.

StephyGtz In reply to meMilly [2010-02-08 00:09:44 +0000 UTC]

oh yeah I do the same, I love been painting over my computer or with traditional tools for hours...but when is more than 5 hours is a little painful xD I usually hear jazz music cause it inspires me a lot, instrumental for old paintings and pop for something new and thanks a lot!! im gonna to do or try a 3th disney coloring book page so it would be super nice if you could help me to improve my art and give me some tips for that...I think im gonna start a new digital painting haha im really isnpired right now haha

I know what you mean!! I've started one and its so much fun. I don't think it'll turn out as nice as yours. But it sure is fun. Like coloring for grown ups. (who are we kidding - I totally color in coloring books now too!)

Ooh, you have? Nice! I can't wait to see it, and I'm sure it will be just great!

I had like a.. extreme resistance to colouring books when I was little
"What? I have to paint INSIDE the lines? Stoopid rules!" so I never did
much colouring, but I agree it's so much fun when it's "for grown ups"!
I should totally get myself a colouring book! ^_^
