Ah, I see. Yes, I think those would have been better more subdued. Thank you. ^^ It is important not to hide too much with just cuteness though, haha.

No, please; I appreciate the coaching. I agree entirely; I have an art teacher who familiarized me with the concept of artistic license, and I enjoy using it. Directly referencing from a photograph does not produce anything very original; plus it's more fun, in my opinion, to interpret a photograph creatively. And that's something I've been working on, learning those principles so I can apply them when working from references like this. This was based on a photo reference, yes.

I got up to speed in digital painting largely by studying demos by Matt Kohr at his website, ctrlpaint.com ctrlpaint.com So much of Kohr's site is about the tech, which, really, is what I wanted to learn. But, he is also a very good artist and art teacher. His demos on painting t-nails from reference might interest you, because while they utilize reference, they are not intended to copy the reference, only to use it for conceptualizing and providing generic detail. (Well, not exactly. Some are, some are not. It depends on the skill one wants to develop.)
Here are links to his demos on "The Tiny Study"www.ctrlpaint.com/videos/the-t… and "Imaginary Landscape Thumbnails" www.ctrlpaint.com/videos/imagi… . He has others of this sort, but it's difficult for me to find them in his library; the titles aren't always fully descriptive of the content. If you like these, you can always look through the website and sample others until you find something to your liking.

Oh, I checked out his site and I'm very impressed; watched the ones you mentioned and some videos on composition, and they helped me out quite a bit. Thanks for the recommendation! I need all the help I can get at this stage, and his videos provide some very good pointers, like you were saying.

Ah! well. Seems you're way ahead of me there - no surprise. So, then, I won't embarrass myself by messing around at your end of the spectrum and nudge you along in the tiny (but important area) in which I have some facility and experience - the figure. Are you familiar with Steve Prokopenko, aka Proko? His Youtube channel? He has an excellent series on foundation for the figure as well as the best Anatomy demos I've ever seen - actually draws in PhotoShop straight over the reference as if putting together a plate for a medical book.
Hale and Bridgman (mentor and protege, both instructors at the Art Students League in NYC), Hogarth (who founded his own school), Hamm and Loomis (extraordinary commercial illustrators and authors), and finally, Glenn Vilppu (near legendary instructor for Disney "Study the model, Don't copy the model") all follow the tradition of the Renaissance Masters. If I ever have any advise, it's simply passed along from them. Sometimes its given in direct quotation, so, if you've read the books, let me know and I'll shut up! LOL.

I have not read the books, but they sound like very good masters to follow! I am also not familiar with Proko, but I will definitely check out his channel at your recommendation. I need to do as Vilppu said and study the model to become familiar with it; I agree that it is an important area to study.
I've been following the Sycra on Youtube; he teaches anatomy in a rather simple and understandable way while at the same time remaining, as far as I know, quite accurate to reality. The videos I've watched of his so far have helped me to achieve a foothold in the beginnings of anatomy. Of course it is good to derive knowledge from multiple sources, and so I will also branch out from there and watch the Youtuber you recommended as well.

Oh no; that joke. ^^ Oh, interesting video with the beans there. Haha; it's all right; I've appreciated it. I haven't had much time as of late, but I will definitely investigate further into a lot of the stuff you've been recommending to me; it's been very helpful.
Cool! I didn't know Sycra was well-known. Ah; I appreciate the style of the Renaissance masters as well, and those books do sound very intriguing; I might see if they're at my library the next time I go.

I had a vast library with links that anyone could use to read them on line or download. Unfortunately, the hard drive crashed. I've been reconstituting the collections, for myself. I realize that artists either will or won't collect their own references and resources. The things they find on their own have more value than hand-me-downs. That said, I did zip off a link with many good references for both digital art and art in general. You can file it away in your Devious Folder in the message center until you're ready to explore it. (That what I did with it! Hehe.)

Oh, that's a pain; it's always awful to lose things like that. True; artists seek out what interests them. And I definitely will check that out later; I'm sure it'll come in handy. Thanks for that!
