Description Sorry for the recent inactivity; I've been trying to manage my time more effectively as of late, but I'm still not drawing as much as I should. Blergh; I want spring.

So, here's an oil portrait. And yes, that right eye is off and it bothers me.

Thank you! Yes, I used his photograph as a reference for this painting. I'm sad to hear he left DA; I love his work too.Β

That amazes me. Β How in the world do you put in so much time and effort to work a painting through to the finish and not see that the eye is off? Β (I mean, I know how I do it. Β LOL. Β But how does it happen to someone like you? ) Β What is it the carpenters say? Β Measure twice; cut once. Β

If you have a newer version of Photoshop you could use "Liquify" to change it - if you wanted to change it. Β I say, it is what it is. Β Much to appreciate "warts and all." Β Sorta like the Mona Lisa. Β What would have happened had Da Vinci fixed that mouth, that smile? Β

Haha, oh it happens to me all right. I've only recently begun learning how to take a step back and apply a critical eye to catch mistakes like these. But yeah, I really should have seen this one earlier. That eye rather horrifies me now, but I understand what you mean. That smile was what set the Mona Lisa apart, after all.

Frank Frazetta used to live near me. Β His wife told me that it was his practice to turn his canvas upside down to check the composition. Β Some will look at their work in a mirror. Β It gives you fresh eyes on the piece as if you'd put it away for a week, but without the loss of time. Β This way you can check it while you're working it, instead of afterward (when it's done and there's nothing you can do about it), and instead of putting the work on hold. Β When working digitally there is flip and zoom - but one has to make it a habit to use them, which is something I discovered recently, first hand.

(And for the record, I didn't notice the eye, until you pointed to it in the artist's comment.)

Ah, that's a very neat trick! Thank you for sharing; that might just help me a lot. I do often find that I am so consumed in my work that I overlook obvious faults; I can see how reversing it or flipping it upside-down to get a fresh look can help greatly.

About the eye... I have to focus a lot on it to see that little failure, it isn'r perceptible at all, so don't worry x3

PS: Spring arrived. Very rainy in Spain(?) Just wanted to say it(?)

You're really talented! The colors and her hair just express a soft beauty and nature, while possibly hinting at her inner fire.

She makes me think of the great women of history that went through trials and tribulations. Like Hypatia of Alexandria.

I think this young woman needs her own story....

Great Detail and Color composition. It seems the right eye-lid is a Little bit misplaced. But anyhow, very very wonderful! I think you would be definitely a Student of a master Artist in old days!

Meorow In reply to LucaHennig [2015-03-20 19:00:23 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank you! Yeah, that right eye was bugging me the whole time. And I would love to be a student artist back when this style was popular; I could see how those paintings came to be.

LucaHennig In reply to Meorow [2015-03-22 13:14:10 +0000 UTC]

It is my pleasure!
I can imagine, sometimes the structures of the face are bugging me as well.
It would be amazing and thrilling to be a student artist back in time, I think.
Yes that would be the most interesting part of it, but in our time we are the ones who must create something amazing as back in the times of the old masters.
And I think you are on the right track!
