Description ... an old proverb tracing back to medieval falconry. The phrase refers to the falcon on the falconer’s hand as being worth more than the two birds in a bush. The falcon can provide food for the falconer, while the birds only offer a one-time meal.

White-throated sparrows, one of eleven species of sparrows in Kansas. These two were very aware of my presence, (some distance away with my telephoto lens.) This was a first spotting and capture for me, though at the time I took the photo I couldn't see the yellow patch by their eyes, a distinguishing feature not found on any of the other 10 species.

I don't normally share photos where the subject is so "enmeshed" with the tree or bush (in this case, weed) it's sitting in. Somehow (at least for me) this time it seems to work and shows the sparrow's camouflage. The white area on their throat is perhaps a bit less noticeable than the yellow by their eyes.
Who named this species anyway?
