One of our bedroom windows looks out on a dead limb on a neighbor's tree. Early this winter I saw a downy going in the hole. I've seen no activity here all winter but spotted this one peeking out today. (My wife gave me the head's up.) I was fortunate that it was still there by the time I got my camera and arrived at an angle outdoors where I could get the shot. The hole is barely bigger than the bird. I have no idea how large the cavity is.
