Description Well, here it is. The final evolution (so far... I think...) of the Steampunk Wing motif that's been bouncing aroung in my brain for half a year. The Gearwing mask.
This is a HUGE mask. I mean really big. Flattened, it's over 20 inches from wingtip to wingtip. It wraps right around your whole face and goes right on off the back of your head. Dramatic.

I have to say this mask is REALLY difficult to shape. I wanted the wings to look like blades rather than feathers (I was thinking of a Japanese War Fan when I designed them) and they had to be fairly straight, but angled, and hold their shape. So I shaped the whole mask with water and heat, dipped the wings in dye (which hardens them more) and shaped them again. Let them dry well and dipped them in acrylic sealer (which again, hardens the leather) and shaped them for a third time. Which did the trick, but wow...it's like making the mask three times instead of just once.

It turned out pretty much like I'd hoped it would, though. Very happy with the gears this time. They actually sort of make sense. I had to use face plates too, for design continuity, which seemed okay to me because watches have face plates that hide gearworks. Or the battery.

No, this mask does not come with batteries.

Like all my masks, this one is carved and shaped entirely by hand with no molds or forms from one piece of 8oz leather. It's painted with colorfast Liquitex acrylics in brown with copper, gold and brass cogs, black wings with silver spokes. Available ONLY in my online Etsy shop, this is "GearWing #1" [link]

Would you mind if I based a character off of this mask? It gave me a really cool idea for one.

I've always liked blue and brown together. They compliment each other pretty well. You're right, this is very dramatic and I love it.

I'd like to see someone make a real metal mask based off this, with actual gears, and dulled blades for the wings... would be rather interesting to see, in my opinion. All the same, very nice.

Marvelous. This is a very unique design, and the faceplates, rather than seeming like laziness or a cop-out sort of thing, instead unify the design, carrying over the gold and metallic into the body of the piece. This is important because the brown is quite necessary to the nature of the design. If it were all in gold and brass, the metallic colors would be overwhelming, in my opinion. The gears and metal pieces in each feather pretend functionality quite nicely. The black stands out crisply against the brighter metallic colors and lend it a somber/seriousness which counteracts the "silliness" often associated with steampunk concepts. (I don't ascribe to that notion, but I know people who do.)

All in all, a gorgeous piece. It might be interesting to see a companion piece fashioned with a similar but not exact silhouette. Say as marriage pieces or something similar.

Thank you. Yes, I needed to add those faceplates because after the intricate "busy"-looking wing designs, the bare empty leather in the center looked stark. The shape of the plates was whimsical (I just basically tried to fil the space with something that fit & looked plausible) but I was happy with the result.

I'm working on two more. I think I'll see if I can get the wing blades to be even straighter...the first mask was slightly less than perfect (but that's what the first one is for...figuring things out).

The idea is really nice, the way you worked it out is great! You succeeded on the wings very well, my compliments about that. I like your steam-punk style very much, it is very original.

Keep up the awesome artwork!

This is such a lovely piece. I like seeing the progression as you make different versions of the motif. It came out gorgeously.

It sounds like a lot of work! I applaud you on all that.

That's stunning. The wings looking like blades also goes well with the steampunk theme of the mask's design. I saw them, and thought of a war-fan as well!

Thank you. It was almost an overreach of what could be done with the medium, to be honest. Any bigger and the wings would have gone floppy.

Holy crapsticks, this is gorgeous! O.O It looks like some avenging steampunk angel, and the blade-wings are wonderful; it makes it look both elegant and somewhat dangerous at the same time.

This is definitely going on my -list.

LOL thank you! My husband says it reminds him of what Native American warriors would have been wearing today if the new world had been colonized by Swiss watchmakers. He's funny like that.

You're welcome. And you can tell your husband that his Swiss watchmakers-idea is pretty interesting, and I might just have to filch it and store it away as a future story-idea.

It always the most satisfying when something that was a pain to make or you had trouble with turns out great. It challenges your abilities and you are able to prove yourself.

Oooh I love this.
Have you thought about a non-steampunk version? I think a plain and simple white mask with white feathers would look amazing.
